Salvaged Historic Timber Supports Local Timber Use in the 19th Century in the Transdanubian Range, Hungary
Despite the multidecadal tradition of dendroarchaeological research in Hungary, few case studies have reported dendrochronological results from historic rural buildings. To address this gap, this study presents the dendrochronological analysis of historic oak timber from four vernacular constructions in western Hungary. Oak was the dominant species, with a minor contribution (10%) of beech. Cross-dated ring-width series of the oak samples derived…
A speleothem record of seasonality and moisture transport around the 8.2 ka event in Central Europe (Vacska Cave, Hungary)
A stalagmite was collected in northern Hungary from the Vacska Cave, where monitoring and ventilation-based site selection had been conducted. The stalagmite covers the 10–8 ka (relative to AD 1950) period, including the so-called 8.2 ka event, and showed preceding signs of climate change that were evaluated by petrographic observations, 14 C activities, Sr concentrations, and stable isotope compositions of calcite and inclusion-hosted water. Com…
The Sisal webApp: Exploring the speleothem climate and environmental archives of the world
We present the ‘SISAL webApp’—a web-based tool to query the Speleothem Isotope Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL) database. The software provides an easy-to-use front-end interface to mine data from the SISAL database while providing the SQL code alongside as a learning tool. It allows for simple and increasingly complex querying of the SISAL database based on various data and metadata fields. The SISAL webApp version currently hosts SISALv2 of the d…
Holocene hydrological changes in Europe and the role of the North Atlantic ocean circulation from a speleothem perspective
Societal concerns about future hydroclimate changes urge a thorough understanding of the governing processes. Here, an analysis of Middle and Late Holocene speleothem-based hydroclimate reconstructions and paleoclimate model simulations reveals sub-millennial fluctuations in the spatiotemporal variability of precipitation in the European and Mediterranean regions, that complements previous dendrochronological and pollen-based reconstructions with…
Social Context of Late Medieval and Early Modern Deforestation Periods in the Apuseni Mountains (Romania) based on an Integrated Evaluation of Historical and Paleobotanical Records
Coeval changes in the reconstructed bog surface wetness and the pollen record of a peat sequence extracted from an ombrothropic bog (Calul de Piatră, 1630 m, Apuseni Mountains) allowed the natural and anthropogenic environmental changes over the past 1500 years to be assessed. The assessment of the social and economic context was also possible due to the exceptionally detailed documentary evidence of the investigated region. Four major deforestat…
Wiggle-Match Dating of a Floating Oak Chronology From an Early Iron Age Grave Construction (Eresztvényi Forest, Fehérvárcsurgó, Hungary)
Archaeological excavations unearthed three burial mounds between 1983 and 1986 at Fehérvárcsurgó (Hungary). Based on the archaeological determination the site was dated to the Early Iron Age. A complex wooden architecture was observed in the largest tumulus containing inner and outer beam constructions separated by stone blocks. Dendrochronological and radiocarbon ( 14 C) analyses were performed on conserved logs (n=5) to constrain the felling da…
Speleothem Records from the Eastern Part of Europe and Turkey—Discussion on Stable Oxygen and Carbon Isotopes
The region comprising of East Central Europe, South East Europe and Turkey contributed to the SISAL (Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis) global database with stable carbon and oxygen isotope time-series from 18 speleothems from 14 caves. The currently available oldest record from the studied region is the ABA-2 flowstone record (Abaliget Cave; Hungary) reaching back to MIS 6. The temporal distribution of the compiled 18 records from the r…
Middle Bronze Age humidity and temperature variations, and societal changes in East-Central Europe
North Atlantic influences on climate conditions in East-Central Europe in the late Holocene reflected by flowstone compositions
A Dráva durvaszemcsés folyóvízi üledékéből előkerült szubfosszilis uszadékfák dendrokronológiai és faanatómiai vizsgálata
This paper presents preliminary results of dendro-chronological analyses of the first occurrence of subfossil tree trunks from drava alluvial sediments. Driftwood logs were found at an outer bend of the Drava river near the village of Babócsa. The site is covered by >6 m fluvial sand and gravel. Trunks are arranged horizontally, roughly in the same bed, between massive gravel and sand layers.. Fourteen samples had been collected within a hundred …
Natural and anthropogenic changes in a lake-forest system in Bukovina (Romania) since 1340 AD documented by sedimentary organic geochemistry (C, N and n-alkanes)
Dendrochronological and radiocarbon analysis of the beam foundation of the medieval stone wall of Székesfehérvár
In this paper the authors publish the results of the dendrochronological and radiocarbon investigation of the beam foundation excavated in the backyard of 20 Jókai Street under the medieval western town wall of Székesfehérvár. Based on the 11 th century dating results – hypothesizing the primary usage of the beams – they delineate the historical significance of the early stone town wall in medieval Europe and the Hungarian Kingdom
Age Estimates on the Deposition of the Cave Ice Block in the Saarhalle Dachstein-Mammoth Cave (Mammuthöhle, Austria) based on 3 H and 14 C
Measurements of the radiocarbon ( 14 C) and tritium ( 3 H) activity in a 5.8-m-long ice core from the Saarhalle, Dachstein-Mammoth Cave allowed a substantial revision of previous opinions concerning the age of the ice block, and provide useful experience that may be applied to future 14 C dating of cave ice deposits. The stepped combustion technique results in a remarkably older radiocarbon age for the 800°C than for the 400°C fractions of the ca…
Radiocarbon-Dated Vegetal Remains from the Cave Ice Deposits of Velebit Mountain, Croatia
Organic material and a few tree trunks have been recovered from the shrinking ice deposits of Velebit Mountain, Croatia. Ten radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates, seven new measurements and three recalibrated ones, from three cave ice deposits were evaluated. The new data argue for the preservation of a ~1000-yr-old deposit in the Kugina Ice Cave and a 14 C age suggests that the ice in the lower section of Vukušić cave ice deposit is very likely older than …

Radiocarbon Impact on a Nearby Tree of a Light-Water VVER-Type Nuclear Power Plant, Paks, Hungary
Tree-ring series were collected for radiocarbon analyses from the vicinity of Paks nuclear power plant (NPP) and a background area (Dunaföldvár) for a 10-yr period (2000–2009). Samples of holocellulose were prepared from the wood and converted to graphite for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C measurement using the MICADAS at ETH Zürich. The 14 C concentration data from these tree rings was compared to the background tree rings for each yea…
High-resolution, well-preserved tritium record in the ice of Bortig Ice Cave, Bihor Mountains, Romania
Two 2 m long ice cores (BA and BB) were extracted from the floor ice of Borştig Ice Cave in December 2005. Below a co-existing dust horizon (~13 cm underneath the 10 December 2005 ice surface) neither core presented any sign of hiatus, so the ice deposition is considered to be continuous. Tritium concentration of 94 samples from a 1.85 m long ice section were analysed by liquid scintillation counting technique. Samples from the lower 0.33 m of th…
