  • Palaeo-ecological and archaeological analysis of two Dutch Celtic fields (Zeijen-Noordse Veld and Wekerom-Lunteren)

    Open Access•Stijn Arnoldussen, Marjolein Van Der Linden•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 13

Celtic fields are the best preserved and most widely distributed type of prehistoric agricultural landscape in the Netherlands, and occur throughout north-western Europe. In this contribution, data from two excavated Dutch Celtic fields are used to explain the process of bank formation and to unravel the agricultural regime of Celtic fields. To this end, traditional archaeological methodologies and geochemical analyses are combined with detailed …

  • A database and synthesis of northern peatland soil properties and Holocene carbon and nitrogen accumulation

    Open Access•Julie Loisel, Zicheng Yu et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 21•References: 11

Here, we present results from the most comprehensive compilation of Holocene peat soil properties with associated carbon and nitrogen accumulation rates for northern peatlands. Our database consists of 268 peat cores from 215 sites located north of 45°N. It encompasses regions within which peat carbon data have only recently become available, such as the West Siberia Lowlands, the Hudson Bay Lowlands, Kamchatka in Far East Russia, and the Tibetan…

  • Carbon accumulation in peat deposits from northern Sweden to northern Germany during the last millennium

Open Access•Marjolein Van Der Linden, Monique MPD Heijmans et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Historic carbon accumulation rates in four bogs on a north to south transect from Sweden to Germany were calculated by using the bulk densities and carbon concentrations of 1-cm peat layers and a fine-resolution radiocarbon chronology. Carbon accumulation rates were compared to environmental data to explore the effects of climatic factors. Carbon accumulation rates in a period without clear human impact on the bog ecosystems ( c.ad 1700–ad 1800) …

  • Dating Recent Peat Accumulation in European Ombrotrophic Bogs

Johannes Van Der Plicht, Dan Yeloff et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 50

This study compares age estimates of recent peat deposits in 10 European ombrotrophic (precipitation-fed) bogs produced using the 14 C bomb peak, 210 Pb, 137 Cs, spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs), and pollen. At 3 sites, the results of the different dating methods agree well. In 5 cores, there is a clear discrepancy between the 14 C bomb peak and 210 Pb age estimates. In the upper layers of the profiles, the age estimates of 14 C and 210 P…
