Radiocarbon chronology of post-Scythian burial practices in the Minusinsk Basin (Southern Siberia)
This article examines the radiocarbon chronology of Tes’ and Tashtyk burial sites in the Minusinsk Basin of Southern Siberia. This region is known for its remarkable diversity of burial constructions and highly complex mortuary practices in the post-Scythian period (2nd century BC to 6th century AD). Based on 168 radiocarbon dates, we traced the chronology and variability of burial practices throughout this period. For the first time, a represent…
Complex distribution of ancient carbon between tributaries of the Upper Lena seen in radiocarbon dates of modern fish
The results of radiocarbon dating of modern fish bone collagen from the Upper Lena River have identified a large and highly variable freshwater reservoir effect, with a maximum offset age of 2389 ± 19 14 C yr BP. Variable contributions from both dissolved bedrock carbonate and permafrost soil melt were identified as the drivers for these reservoir offsets using a combination of bulk and amino acid specific stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes, as …
Experience of Analyzing Textual Representations of the Structural Integration of Migrants in Russia on Social Media Using the Bert Neural Network
The article explores the “digital traces” of the structural integration of cross-border migrants in Russia by combining qualitative text analysis methods with automatic classifiers. Our goal was to analyze posts related to job and housing searches in migrant communities on VKontakte in order to describe the challenges these individuals face and how they use social media to overcome them. From the wide range of practices falling under the definiti…
Sogdian careers and families in sixth- to seventh-century northern China
Six tombs attributed to the Shi family were excavated in Guyuan (China) between 1982 and 1996. The seven epitaph inscriptions (representing seven patrilineal generations) make it possible to reconstruct the life histories of the family members buried between AD 609 and AD 678. The comparative analysis of the epitaph inscriptions suggests links between individual biographies of the Shi men and known historical events. It indicates that the family,…
Vegetation and environmental changes in Northern Anatolia between 134 and 119 ka recorded in Black Sea Sediments
This multiproxy study on SE Black Sea sediments provides the first detailed reconstruction of vegetation and environmental history of Northern Anatolia between 134 and 119 ka. Here, the glacial–interglacial transition is characterized by several short-lived alternating cold and warm events preceding a meltwater pulse (~ 130.4–131.7 ka). The latter is reconstructed as a cold arid period correlated to Heinrich event 11. The initial warming is evide…
Multiproxy evidence for abrupt climate change impacts on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems in the Ol'khon region of Lake Baikal, central Asia
Archaeological and palaeopathological study on the third/second century BC grave from Turfan, China
Mapping of the spatial and temporal distribution of archaeological sites of northern China during the Neolithic and Bronze Age
A standard sample method for controlling microfossil data precision
Evidence for a permanent lake in Sua Pan (Kalahari, Botswana) during the early centuries of the last millennium indicated by distribution of Baobab trees (Adansonia digitata) on “Kubu Island”
Reply to “Comment on a study on Holocene foraminifera from the Aral Sea and West Siberian lakes and its implication for migration pathways” by S.A. Gusskov, Y.V. Kuzmin, E.Y. Zhakov
Human interactions with climate variability in China over the past 2000 years
A study on Holocene foraminifera from the Aral Sea and West Siberian lakes and its implication for migration pathways
Comparison of modeled and reconstructed changes in forest cover through the past 8000 years
Reproducing the tree cover changes throughout the Holocene is a challenge for land surface–atmosphere models. Here, results of a transient Holocene simulation of the coupled climate–carbon cycle model, CLIMBER2-LPJ, driven by changes in orbital forcing, are compared with pollen data and pollen-based reconstructions for several regions of Eurasia in terms of changes in tree fraction. The decline in tree fraction in the high latitudes suggested by …
New 14 C Determinations from Lake Suigetsu, Japan
Calibration is a fundamental stage of the radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating process if one is to derive meaningful calendar ages from samples' 14 C measurements. For the first time, the IntCal09 calibration curve (Reimer et al. 2009) provided an internationally ratified calibration data set across almost the complete range (0 to 50,000 cal BP) of the 14 C timescale. However, only the last 12,550 cal yr of this record are composed of terrestrial data, le…
Palynological and satellite-based Modis observations of modern vegetational gradients in China
Holocene environments and climate in the Mongolian Altai reconstructed from the Hoton-Nur pollen and diatom records
The ornamental trousers from Sampula (Xinjiang, China)
A decorated pair of trousers excavated from a well-preserved tomb in the Tarim Basin proved to have a highly informative life history, teased out by the authors - with archaeological, historical and art historical dexterity. Probably created under Greek influence in a Bactrian palace, the textile started life in the third/second century BC as an ornamental wall hanging, showing a centaur blowing a war-trumpet and a nearly life-size warrior of the…
Mid- to Late Holocene climate change
Palaeobotanical evidence for warm summers in the East Siberian Arctic during the last cold stage
Plant macrofossils from the “Mamontovy Khayata” permafrost sequence (71°60′N, 129°25′E) on the Bykovsky Peninsula reflect climate and plant biodiversity in west Beringia during the last cold stage. 70 AMS and 20 conventional 14 C dates suggest sediment accumulation between about 60,000 and 7500 14 C yr B.P. The plant remains prove that during the last cold-stage arctic species ( Minuartia arctica , Draba spp., Kobresia myosuroides ) coexisted wit…
Unstable early-Holocene climatic and environmental conditions in northwestern Russia derived from a multidisciplinary study of a lake-sediment sequence from Pichozero, southeastern Russian Karelia
A sediment core from Lake Pichozero (6146'; N, 3725'; E 118 m a.s.l.) provides information on the environmental and climatic conditions in southeastern Russian Karelia during the Lateglacial and early Holocene (12 800-9300 cal. BP). The chronology of the sequence is constrainied by varve counting and AMS 14 C measurement of terrestrial plant macrofossils. Multiproxy analyses (magnetic susceptibility, grain size, TOC, TN, TS, Rock Eval, pollen and…
Late Holocene vegetation history and human activity shown by pollen analysis of Novienki peat bog (Kargaly region, Orenburg Oblast, Russia)
Lateglacial and early-Holocene environments of Novaya Zemlya and the Kara Sea Region of the Russian Arctic
Pollen and radiocarbon data from Novaya Zemlya and the Kara Sea Region suggest that the hypo thetical Panarctic Ice Sheet (Denton and Hughes, 1981) never existed in this area, at least during the last 16 000 years. Lateglacial tundra environments were slightly cooler and drier than the present ones, but there were also warmer intervals such as the Allerød, which were rather favourable for vegetation development. Better conditions existed during t…
