  • Dating Charred Soil Organic Matter

Open Access•Eileen Eckmeier, Klaas Van Der Borg et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 32

Radiocarbon dating of charcoal in soils is commonly used to reconstruct past environmental processes. Also microcharcoal that is chemically isolated from soil organic matter by high-energy UV photo-oxidation can be dated with 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). We compared the 14 C AMS ages of 13 pairs of hand-picked macrocharcoals and microcharcoal samples separated via the UV oxidation method; both charcoal fractions were taken from the s…

  • Further Radiocarbon Dates from the Catacombs of St. Callixtus in Rome

Open Access•Leonard V Rutgers, Klaas Van Der Borg et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•References: 14

This paper reports a further chronological assessment of the Christian catacombs of Rome by radiocarbon-dated organic materials in the so-called Liberian region of the catacombs of St. Callixtus on the Appian Way. 14 C dates of various types of organic material are discussed and related to ages derived from numismatic evidence and epigraphic remains. The results show that this area of the catacombs of St. Callixtus is older than assumed by previo…

  • The effect of climate variability on pollen productivity, AD 1975-2000, recorded in a Sphagnum peat hummock

    Open Access•Per Sjögren, Jacqueline F N Van Leeuwen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Pollen accumulation rates and pollen percentages from a Sphagnum peat hummock in the Jura Mountains were used to determine past pollen deposition. Post-bomb calibrated radiocarbon dates allowed estimations of annual variability in pollen productivity AD 1975-2000. Percentages of abundant taxa were modified (downweighted) to reduce the influence of plant cover, mean pollen productivity, and interdependence of the variables. Significant correlation…

The results show that the Late Cedrosan Saladoid population ( ̃400–800 cal yr A.D…

  • Holocene paleogeographies of the Palairos coastal plain (Akarnania, northwest Greece) and their geoarchaeological implications

Open Access•A Vött, Helmut Brückner et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2006

Sediments from the Palairos coastal plain (Akarnania, northwest Greece) were studied to establish paleogeographical scenarios of Holocene landscape evolution. Near coast vibracore profiles revealed regressive sedimentary sequences, the base of which is dominated by marine sand and/or lagoonal mud. The middle and upper parts of the sequences are made up of lacustrine mud and fine‐ to coarse‐grained alluvial deposits reflecting the increased activi…

    Open Access•Torbjörn E Törnqvist, Arie F M De Jong et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 21•References: 27

We made a comparative study of AMS 14 C ages of organic deposits (minerotrophic peats and gyttjas) and macrofossils in order to evaluate the magnitude of a number of sources of error that may be present in bulk sediment samples. The consistency of 14 C ages found for coexisting macrofossils suggests that they are unlikely to record disturbances. Some of our gyttja samples yielded an age 0.2–0.6 ka 14 C years too old due to hardwater effect. We al…

  • A Late Quaternary Stratigraphic Framework for Eastern Mediterranean Sapropel S1 Based on AMS 14 C Dates and Stable Oxygen Isotopes

    Open Access•S R Troelstra, G M Ganssen et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Detailed stable oxygen isotope analyses coupled with AMS 14 C measurements on an eastern Mediterranean sapropel S1 sequence indicate that adverse bottom conditions persisted for ca 8000 years. AMS dates on additional sequences show that complete bottom anoxia lasted for 300-800 years. The S1 event is not synchronous throughout the eastern Mediterranean, but started earlier in the deeper parts of the basin

  • Late Quaternary Pteropod Preservation in Eastern North Atlantic Sediments in Relation to Changing Climate

    Open Access•G M Ganssen, S R Troelstra et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1991•References: 11

AMS 14 C measurements on pteropod shells from eastern North Atlantic deep-sea cores reveal distinct periods of aragonite preservation during the last 16,000 years. Most preservation spikes coincide with documented periods of climatic change on a scale of 2 × 10 1 to 2 × 10 3 years

  • The Timing of the Postglacial Marine Invasion of Kau Bay, Halmahera, Indonesia

A 7000-year pollen record of a 90 cm core from Chenevo (4°05'N, 70°21'W, 150 m alttitude) and a 3500-year pollen record of a 285 cm core from Mozambique (3°58 N, 73°03 W, 175 m altitude) both from the savannas of the Llanos Orientales, Colombia, are presented. The records show dynamics between open savanna (Poaceae, Cyperaceae), woody savanna (Byrsonima, Curatella, Didymopanax), palm swamp (Mauritia, Mauritiella), forest and gallery forest taxa. …

  • Radiocarbon Dates from the Jewish Catacombs of Rome

    Open Access•Leonard V Rutgers, Arie F M De Jong et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 10

This paper reports on the first chronological assessment of the Jewish Catacombs of the ancient Rome performed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating of small-size charcoal fragments scattered in the mortar used for sealing off the graves in the Villa Torlonia Catacomb complex. The significance of the obtained 14 C readings has been carefully evaluated by taking into consideration the known technologies of quicklime production during Roman…

  • Late Holocene Environmental Reconstruction of St. Michiel Saline Lagoon, Curaçao (Dutch Antilles)

    Open Access•Bogumila B Klosowska, Simon R Troelstra et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004

Two sediment cores collected from the saline lagoon St. Michiel on Curaçao (Dutch Antilles) preserve a ~5000-yr record of environmental change. Investigation of radiocarbon-dated sections by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is based on faunal assemblage analyses, sediment mineralogy, and the interpretation of sedimentary facies. The cores recovered from different parts of the lagoon demonstrate different development. Initially, in the proximal…

  • Radiocarbon Dates from the Catacombs of St. Callixtus in Rome

Open Access•Leonard V Rutgers, Klaas Van Der Borg et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This paper reports the first chronological assessment of the Christian catacombs of Rome by radiocarbon dating. The organic materials dated were found in a set of burial rooms in the so-called Liberian region of the catacombs of St. Callixtus on the Appian Way. 14 C dating of small samples by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) represents a major advance over traditional archaeological dating methods used in catacomb archaeology; however, AMS 14 …

  • Climate and pre‐Columbian settlement at Anse à la Gourde, Guadeloupe, Northeastern Caribbean

    Open Access•C Beets, C J Beets et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2006•Cited by: 13

The authors present a reconstruction of precipitation, seasonality, and vegetation cover over the period from 200 cal yr B.C. to 1600 cal yr A.D. for the archaeological site of Anse à la Gourde, Guadeloupe, based on the oxygen and carbon isotope composition of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C‐dated aragonitic shells of the landsnail Bulimulus guadaloupensis.

  • Quantitative Determination by 14 C Analysis of the Biological Component in Fuels

Open Access•Ivo J Dijs, Eric van der Windt et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2006•Cited by: 11•References: 8

Radiocarbon analysis was performed by liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) to assess whether the content of biological components in hydrocarbon fuels could be derived. Different fuel mixtures were prepared containing bioethanol, fossil ethanol, and fossil gasoline. The specific 14 C activity of these mixtures was obtained from LSC measurements and directly related to the concentration of carbon originating …
