  • Atmospheric Co 2 Carbon Isotope Composition in Urban and Clean Areas of the Northern Adriatic Coast of Croatia

Open Access•Andreja Sironić, Emma Hess et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 60

Over the course of one year (2021), we monitored the carbon isotope composition of atmospheric CO 2 at three locations in Croatia: the Adriatic port city of Rijeka (Cfa climate) and at two rural sites: Gornje Jelenje (Cfb climate) in the vicinity of a main road and clean-air site Parg (Dfb climate). Carbon isotope composition at all sites shows seasonal variation, ranging from –41.3 to 25.2‰ for Δ 14 C and from –13.1 to –11.3‰ for δ 13 C. Rijeka …

  • Radiocarbon Mortar Dating Intercomparison Modis2—approach From the Zagreb Radiocarbon Laboratory, Croatia

Open Access•Andreja Sironić, Alexander Cherkinsky et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 32

The Second International Mortar Dating Intercomparison Study (MODIS2) took place in 2020. Three mortar samples from different sites and chronologies were distributed among various research groups in form of bulk mortar and grain fraction smaller than 150 μm. This is the first time the Zagreb Radiocarbon Laboratory, with support of the Center of Applied Isotope Studies, University of Georgia, took part in the international mortar intercomparison. …

  • Application of 14 C Method to Chronology of the Croatian Dinaric Karst—a Case of the Plitvice Lakes

Open Access•Ines Krajcar Bronić, Jadranka Barešić et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 47

Karst environments preserve some of the best archives of past climate, vegetation, hydrology, anthropogenic impact, and landscape evolution providing that a reliable chronology can be established. Here we present an example of the system of the Plitvice Lakes (Dinaric karst, Croatia), which is characterized by intensive tufa and lake sediment formations. The radiocarbon dating method, combined with some other dating methods and various geochemica…

  • Rudjer Bošković Institute Radiocarbon Measurements Xviii

Open Access•Bogomil Obelić, Ines Krajcar Bronić et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•References: 17

In this paper we present dating of archaeological samples from Croatia only performed since our last reports (Obelić et al. 2011; Horvatinčić et al. 2012). Liquid scintillation radiometric measurement technique with benzene synthesis (LSC-B) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique were applied

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Mortar from the Aqueduct in Skopje

Open Access•Andreja Sironić, Damir Borković et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 36

The Aqueduct is one of the city landmarks of Skopje, Republic of North Macedonia. It was part of a water-supply system, with a total original length of about 10 km, while its surface remains are about 385 m long. The age of the Aqueduct is not known—several hypotheses place it to periods between the 6th and 16th centuries. Six mortar samples from different positions of the eastern façade were taken for radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating. In order to extr…

  • Mineralogical, organic and isotopic composition as palaeoenvironmental records in the lake sediments of two lakes, the Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

Open Access•Nada Horvatinčić, Andreja Sironić et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Ahdname, Mantel, and Armorial from the Fojnica Franciscan Monastery, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Open Access•Nada Horvatinčić, Andreja Sironić et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•References: 8

In this work, we present the results of radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of three historically important objects related to the period of the reign of the Ottoman Empire in Europe. The following objects from the museum collection of the Franciscan Monastery in Fojnica, Bosnia and Herzegovina were 14 C dated: (1) paper from the Ahdname ( Fojnička ahdnama ); (2) textile of the mantel of Fra Anđeo Zvizdović; and (3) paper from the Fojnica Armorial ( Fojni…

  • New Data on Marine Radiocarbon Reservoir Effect in the Eastern Adriatic Based on Pre-Bomb Marine Organisms from the Intertidal Zone and Shallow Sea

    Open Access•Sanja Faivre, Tatjana Bakran-Petricioli et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 37

Radiocarbon analyses of 14 modern, pre-bomb marine organisms collected between AD 1836 and 1946 along the eastern Adriatic coast were performed. The 14 C ages of five algal and nine mollusk samples were measured by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Marine 14 C reservoir ages (R) and regional offsets (ΔR) were calculated and compared. The marine reservoir ages of shells and algae significantly differ, even though both inhabit the hard substrate…

Open Access•Nada Horvatinčić, Ines Krajcar Bronić et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 24

This paper presents dating results of geological (speleothems, tufa, soil, and sediment), biological (mollusks and botanical), as well as hydrogeological samples from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, and China. Included arc results of samples measured by gas proportional counting (GPC) in the Zagreb lab until abandonment of this technique in 2007, as well as results of several series measured by both GPC and liquid scintillation…

  • Towards a Deeper Understanding of How Carbonate Isotopes ( 14 C, 13 C, 18 O) Reflect Environmental Changes

Open Access•Nada Horvatinčić, Jadranka Barešić et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 44

Five short cores (top 40–45 cm of sediment) from 4 lakes of the Plitvice Lakes system (Croatia) were measured for 210 Pb, 137 Cs, a 14 C, δ 13 C, and δ 18 O in order to study the influence of environmental changes on the sediment system in small and large lakes. Sediment chronology based on the constant flux (CF) 210 Pb model was the most reliable. Lake sediments consisted mainly of autochthonous carbonates with higher sedimentation rates in smal…

  • Dating of the Old Bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Open Access•Bogomil Obelić, Ines Krajcar Bronić et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The famous single-arch stone bridge over the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was built in 1557–1566 by the order of Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. During the reconstruction of the Old Bridge, which was destroyed during the war in 1993, remnants of 2 older wooden bridges were found at the same location. Six wood and 2 charcoal samples were dated using the radiocarbon method. Wood samples with visible tree rings were take…
