Multi-view dynastic classification and visual interpretation of blue-and-white porcelain
This study applies deep learning to classify—and interpret—blue-and-white porcelain images by dynastic period and studies the role of multiple object views. A multi-view dataset of Ming and Qing porcelain captured from different angles was curated, resulting in 284 objects and 963 images. Among the evaluated models, a pretrained and fine-tuned ResNet-50 (ImageNet1K-V2) achieved the best performance. Incorporating multiple views of the same object…
Key drivers and predictability of the unprecedented 2024 United Arab Emirates flood
In mid-April 2024, the Arabian Peninsula was struck by an extreme rainfall event, during which some areas received an entire year’s worth of precipitation within just 24 h. The United Arab Emirates was the hardest hit, experiencing widespread flooding, four fatalities, and economic damages exceeding USD 544 million. Analysis of multiple precipitation datasets confirmed that this was the most intense daily rainfall event ever recorded in the regio…
Burst flooding in Singapore
Urbanisation significantly alters the interaction between land surface and the lower troposphere, impacting occurrences of natural hazards. The influence of urbanisation on natural hazards like heatwaves, hailstorms, and flooding remains debated. However, it is well established that impervious surfaces in urban areas can lead to flooding amplification. Singapore, amidst rapid urbanisation, experiences frequent flooding, exacerbated by its tropica…
Inconsistency between records of δ 18 O and trace element ratios from stalagmites
The interpretation of trace element/calcium ratios of speleothems as indicators of local hydroclimatic variability in the vicinity of caves has led to controversy in reconstructing the evolution of moisture conditions in arid central Asia (ACA) during the Holocene. Here we present records of Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, and U/Ca from precisely dated stalagmites from Baluk cave in Xinjiang (northwest China), spanning the past 9370 years. The co-variations…
Holocene relative sea-level records from coral microatolls in Western Borneo, South China Sea
The spatial variability of Holocene relative sea level (RSL) in the South China Sea is unknown, with data restricted to Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, and a few other isolated sites. In this study, we present new continuous RSL records for Borneo using surveyed and U–Th dated coral microatolls from four sites in western Sarawak. The record spans 450 years of RSL from 7450 to 7000 yr BP. Our data suggest that RSL was higher than present and rapid …
The Asian monsoon over the past 640,000 years and ice age terminations
Mercury isotopes of atmospheric particle bound mercury for source apportionment study in urban Kolkata, India
The particle bound mercury (PBM) in urban-industrial areas is mainly of anthropogenic origin, and is derived from two principal sources: Hg bound to particulate matter directly emitted by industries and power generation plants, and adsorption of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) on air particulates from gas or aqueous phases. Here, we measured the Hg isotope composition of PBM in PM10 samples collected from three …
Paleoclimate and growth rates of speleothems in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula over the last two glacial cycles
Speleothem growth requires humid climates sufficiently warm to stimulate soil CO 2 production by plants. We compile 283 U/Th dates on 21 stalagmites from six cave systems in the NW coast of Spain to evaluate if there are patterns in stalagmite growth that are evidence of climatic forcing. In the oldest stalagmites, from marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 7–5, growth persists through the glacial period. Hiatuses and major reductions in growth rate …
Improvements in 230Th dating, 230Th and 234U half-life values, and U–Th isotopic measurements by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry
The variation of summer monsoon precipitation in central China since the last deglaciation
A Test of Climate, Sun, and Culture Relationships from an 1810-Year Chinese Cave Record
A record from Wanxiang Cave, China, characterizes Asian Monsoon (AM) history over the past 1810 years. The summer monsoon correlates with solar variability, Northern Hemisphere and Chinese temperature, Alpine glacial retreat, and Chinese cultural changes. It was generally strong during Europe's Medieval Warm Period and weak during Europe's Little Ice Age, as well as during the final decades of the Tang, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties, all times that we…
Millennial- and orbital-scale changes in the East Asian monsoon over the past 224,000 years
Α high-resolution late Holocene speleothem record from Kaite Cave, northern Spain
Geochronology, sediment provenance, and fossil emplacement at Sumidouro Cave, a classic late Pleistocene/early Holocene Paleoanthropological site in eastern Brazil
Peter Wilhelm Lund's (1845a) heavily debated suggestion of a contemporaneity between Paleo‐Indians and extinct Pleistocene fauna at Sumidouro Cave was re‐examined through detailed sedimentological and geochronological analyses of sediment and both human and faunal remains. Sources of the cave's sediment include both entrances as well as ceiling fissures. Non‐human fossils, on the other hand, were probably carried by floodwater through the once mo…
Spectral analysis of a 1000-year stalagmite lamina-thickness record from Shihua Cavern, Beijing, China, and its climatic significance
Stalagmite laminae provide a high-resolution geological record of climate change. In this paper, moving spectral analysis is used to analyse a stalagmite lamina thickness record to study climatic variability. It was found that the dominant cycles of the lamina thickness sequence are 2, 3.3, 5–6, 10–12, 14–18, 133 and 194 years. Some of the cycles are the same as the cycles of modern climatic indices, such as the QBO (Quasi Biennial Oscillation) o…
