Assessing past climate changes from proxy records
Radiocarbon Beyond this World
In this paper, we review the production of radiocarbon and other radionuclides in extraterrestrial materials. This radioactivity can be produced by the effects of solar and galactic cosmic rays on solid material in space. In addition, direct implantation at the lunar surface of 14 C and other radionuclides can occur. The level of 14 C and other radionuclides in a meteorite can be used to determine its residence time on the Earth's surface, or “te…
On Cosmic-Ray Exposure Ages of Terrestrial Rocks
An important recent development in the field of geomorphology has been the application of in-situ cosmic-ray-produced nuclides to obtain model erosion rates and surface exposure ages. These concepts emerged some four decades ago in studies of cosmogenic nuclides in meteorites, but cannot generally be used analogously for terrestrial rocks. The differences in the two cases are outlined. For the case of steady-state erosional histories , the terres…

Cosmogenic Nuclides in Ice Sheets
We discuss the nature of the twofold record of cosmogenic nuclides in ice sheets, of nuclei produced in the atmosphere, and of nuclei produced in situ due to interactions of cosmic-ray particles with oxygen nuclei in ice. We show that a wealth of geophysical information, in principle, can be derived from a suitable combination of nuclides in ice deposited at different latitudes. Such knowledge includes temporal changes in the cosmic-ray flux, in …
Solar Modulation Effects in Terrestrial Production of Carbon-14
This paper is concerned with the expected deviations in the production rate of natural 14 C on the earth due to changes in solar activity. We review the published estimates of the global production rates of 14 C due to galactic and solar cosmic ray particles, and present new estimates of the expected secular variations in 14 C production, taking into account the latest information available on galactic cosmic ray modulation and long-term variatio…
