  • Abrupt onset of the Little Ice Age triggered by volcanism and sustained by sea‐ice/ocean feedbacks

Open Access•Gifford H Miller, Áslaug Geirsdóttir et al.•ARTICLE•Geophysical Research Letters•2012

Northern Hemisphere summer temperatures over the past 8000 years have been paced by the slow decrease in summer insolation resulting from the precession of the equinoxes. However, the causes of superposed century‐scale cold summer anomalies, of which the Little Ice Age (LIA) is the most extreme, remain debated, largely because the natural forcings are either weak or, in the case of volcanism, short lived. Here we present precisely dated records o…

  • Recent Warming Reverses Long-Term Arctic Cooling

    Open Access•Darrell S Kaufman, David P Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2009

Climate Reversal The climate and environment of the Arctic have changed drastically over the short course of modern observation. Kaufman et al. (p. 1236 ) synthesized 2000 years of proxy data from lakes above 60° N latitude with complementary ice core and tree ring records, to create a paleoclimate reconstruction for the Arctic with a 10-year resolution. A gradual cooling trend at the start of the record had reversed by the beginning of the 20th …

  • Multicentury-Scale Records of Carbonate (Hydrographic?) Variability on the Northern Iceland Margin over the Last 5000 Years

    Open Access•John T Andrews, Guðrún Helgadóttir et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

The waters off northern Iceland are subjected to extreme hydrographic variability on annual to decadal timescales. In years when cold low-salinity water moves coastward and sea ice is prevalent (i.e., the late 1960s), marine productivity of surface waters is low because the water column is well stratified. In the opposite oceanographic mode, warm, salty Atlantic Water dominates the shelf and vertical mixing results in high productivity. We track …

  • Late-Holocene terrestrial glacial history of Miki and I.C. Jacobsen Fjords, East Greenland

    Open Access•Áslaug Geirsdóttir, Jórunn Harđardóttir et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2000•Cited by: 5•References: 2

We present a late-Holocene glacial and environmental history of three valleys within Miki and I.C. Jacobsen Fjords, East Greenland (68°N). The fjords have no direct connection with the main ice sheet and are presently glacierized by a series of local ice caps and glaciers. Little sediment has been deposited within the study area, but bedrock is distinctly glacially striated, which suggests that extensive valley glaciers reached the present coastl…

  • C AMS Dating of Icelandic Lake Sediments

    Open Access•Árný E Sveinbjörnsdóttir, Jan Heinemeier et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 7

We report an age-depth profile for the sediments of the Lake Hesrvatn, southern Iceland, based on 14 C analyses of the organic fraction of bulk sediment samples, molluscs and foraminifera. Our age-depth curve is supported by the occurrence of the well-dated Vedde ash in the lowermost part of the sediments. Comparison of foraminifera dates with the age of the Vedde ash indicates a reservoir age of ca. 400 yr. The results suggest that the sediments…

  • Growth of an Intermittent Ice Sheet in Iceland during the Late Pliocene and Early Pleistocene

    Open Access•Áslaug Geirsdóttir, Jón Eiríksson•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Deep-sea paleoclimatic records show that the Quaternary climate around Iceland was, and probably still is, very sensitive to rapid shifts in North Atlantic oceanic circulation. Studies of several key sections in Iceland indicate that similar oscillations are reflected in the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene terrestrial stratigraphy. Correlations between six rock sequences in western, northern, eastern, and southern Iceland show a fairly distin…
