  • Rock varnish record of the African Humid Period in the Lake Turkana basin of East Africa

    Open Access•Tanzhuo Liu, Christopher J Lepre et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Rock varnish is a manganiferous dark coating accreted on subaerially exposed rocks in drylands. It often contains a layered microstratigraphy that records past wetness variations. Varnish samples from latest Pleistocene and Holocene geomorphic features in the Lake Turkana basin, East Africa display a regionally replicable microstratigraphy record of Holocene millennial-scale wetness variability and a broad interval of wetter conditions during the…

  • Holocene history of Mono Lake, California, USA, from multiple sediment cores

    Open Access•Susan R Zimmerman, Scott W Starratt et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015

  • Freshwater control of ice-rafted debris in the last glacial period at Mono Lake, California, USA

Open Access•Susan Zimmerman, Crystal Pearl et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

The type section silts of the late Pleistocene Wilson Creek Formation at Mono Lake contain outsized clasts, dominantly well-rounded pebbles and cobbles of Sierran lithologies. Lithic grains > 425 μm show a similar pattern of variability as the > 10 mm clasts visible in the type section, with decreasing absolute abundance in southern and eastern outcrops. The largest concentrations of ice-rafted debris (IRD) occur at 67–57 ka and 46–32 ka, with st…

  • Heinrich events

    Open Access•Sidney R Hemming•ARTICLE•Reviews of Geophysics•2004

Millennial climate oscillations of the glacial interval are interrupted by extreme events, the so‐called Heinrich events of the North Atlantic. Their near‐global footprint is a testament to coherent interactions among Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and cryosphere on millennial timescales. Heinrich detritus appears to have been derived from the region around Hudson Strait. It was deposited over approximately 500 ± 250 years. Several mechanisms have b…

  • Ice-rafted detritus evidence from 40Ar/39Ar ages of individual hornblende grains for evolution of the eastern margin of the Laurentide ice sheet since 43 14Cky

    Open Access•Sidney R Hemming, Irena Hajdas•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2003

  • Provinciality of ice rafting in the North Atlantic

    Open Access•Sidney R Hemming, Tore O Vorren et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2002

  • A Reassessment of U-Th and 14 C Ages for Late-Glacial High-Frequency Hydrological Events at Searles Lake, California

    Open Access•Jo C Lin, Jo Chiu-Fang Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1998

U-Th isochron ages of tufas formed on shorelines suggest that the last pluvial event in Lake Lahontan and Searles Lake was synchronous at about 16,500 cal yr B.P. (equivalent to a radiocarbon age of between 14,000 and 13,500 yr B.P.), whereas the timing of this pluvial event determined by radiocarbon dating is on the order of 1000 yr younger. The timing of seven distinct periods of near desiccation in Searles Lake during late-glacial time has bee…
