Lacustrine record of last millennia eruptions in Northern Chilean Patagonia (45–47°S)
Due to its tectonic setting, the Andean Southern Volcanism Zone (SSVZ) is characterized by frequent volcanic activity. Chilean Patagonia lake sediments represent powerful archives of historical and past eruptions since the deglaciation. The lacustrine tephra record is investigated in 10 Holocene sedimentary cores collected in five lakes located along a 45–47° transect through Northern Chilean Patagonia. All the tephras identified by visual observ…
Late Holocene precipitation variability recorded in the sediments of Reloncaví Fjord (41°S, 72°W), Chile
We present reconstructions of late Holocene changes in the source of organic matter and siliceous export production in the Relocanví Fjord (41°S, 72°W), Northern Chilean Patagonia, based on organic carbon content, δ 13 C org , N/C ratio, diatom assemblages and biogenic silica contents from three sediment cores. The age models are based on a combination of 210 Pb profiles, AMS 14 C dating, and on the first occurrence of the diatom Rhizosolenia set…
Covariability of precipitation and sea surface temperature changes in Northern Chilean Patagonia during the last 2000 years
Ostracods from a Marmara Sea lagoon (Turkey) as tsunami indicators
Correcting bulk radiocarbon ages from lake sediments
Gualas Glacier sedimentary record of climate and environmental change, Golfo Elefantes, Western Patagonia (46.5°S)
Gualas Glacier is an outlet glacier of the Northern Patagonian Icefield, one of the largest temperate ice bodies on Earth. Golfo Elefantes, the depositional basin of Gualas Glacier, has a sedimentary record that spans, with some hiatuses, at least the last ~11.3±3.0 ka. During this period the gulf remained free of ice, as suggested by the absence of proximal glacimarine sediment and till in the sedimentary section. This implies that the arcuate t…
Late Holocene sea-surface temperature and precipitation variability in northern Patagonia, Chile (Jacaf Fjord, 44°S)
A high-resolution multi-proxy study including the elemental and isotopic composition of bulk organic matter, land plant-derived biomarkers, and alkenone-based sea-surface temperature (SST) from a marine sedimentary record obtained from the Jacaf Fjord in northern Chilean Patagonia (∼44°20′S) provided a detailed reconstruction of continental runoff, precipitation, and summer SST spanning the last 1750 yr. We observed two different regimes of clima…
Tephrostratigraphy of the late glacial and Holocene sediments of Puyehue Lake (Southern Volcanic Zone, Chile, 40°S)
We document the mineralogical and geochemical composition of tephra layers identified in the late Quaternary sediments of Puyehue Lake (Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes, Chile, 40°S) to identify the source volcanoes and to present the first tephrostratigraphic model for the region. For the last millennium, we propose a multi-criteria correlation model based on five tephra layers identified at seven coring sites. The two upper tephras are thin …
Temporal evolution of sediment supply in Lago Puyehue (Southern Chile) during the last 600 yr and its climatic significance
Short-term climate changes in Southern Chile are investigated by a multi-proxy analysis of a 53-cm-long sedimentary sequence selected among eight short cores retrieved in Lago Puyehue (Chile, 40°S). This core contains a 600-yr-long undisturbed record of paleo-precipitation changes. Two measurement methods for sediment density, organic matter and biogenic silica contents are compared and the most appropriate techniques are selected. Together with …
