  • Re‐examining the age of the Affad MSA deposits in the Middle Nile Valley

    Open Access•Piotr Osypiński, Sallie L Burrough et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 16

We present data on the chronology of fluvial and aeolian sediments as well as ecofacts that allow us to indicate the timing of Middle Stone Age settlement in Affad on the Middle Nile. Previously published chronometric data based solely on (multi‐grain) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates suggested the extremely late settlement and usage of Middle Stone Age technology in North‐East Africa during the Terminal Pleistocene (post‐Last Glacia…

  • Implications of a new chronology for the interpretation of the Middle and Later Stone Age of the upper Zambezi Valley

    Open Access•Sallie L Burrough, David S G Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 11

  • Luminescence-based dune chronologies in southern Africa

    Open Access•David S G Thomas, Sallie L Burrough•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • Ecosystem resilience to late-Holocene climate change in the Upper Zambezi Valley

    Open Access•Sallie L Burrough, Kathy J Willis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Peat deposits from wetlands in the Upper Zambezi Valley provide an important long-term window on ecosystem dynamics in the Kalahari basin during the late Holocene. We use fossil pollen and macro-charcoal extracted from peat cores contained in three wetland sites to examine the response of vegetation to regional climate change. We find that during the last 6 ka, internal ecosystem dynamics are more important than climate, as observed by independen…

  • Interpreting geoproxies of late Quaternary climate change in African drylands

    Open Access•David S G Thomas, Sallie L Burrough•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Late Quaternary lake-level fluctuations in the Mababe Depression

    Open Access•Sallie L Burrough, David S G Thomas•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

A systematic drilling and optical dating programme on Middle Kalahari beach ridge (relict shoreline) sediments has enabled the identification of multiple episodes of lake high stands of an extensive palaeolake system at the terminus of the Okavango Delta, northern Botswana. This paper presents 23 ages from the Mababe Depression and establishes four shoreline construction phases in the late Quaternary coeval with other sub-basin lake high stands (…
