  • Holocene Overwash Occurrence Age in the Isumi River Lowland, Eastern Boso Peninsula, Japan

    Open Access•Soichiro Oda, Stephen P Obrochta et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 13

Analysis of the chronological data and observation of a lagoonal sediment core reveal sand washover events between around 2.4 to 2.5 cal. ky BP in the Isumi River lowland. We conducted radiocarbon dating with AMS and constructed an age-depth model using the latest calibration curve and appropriate model routine. In the middle to lower part of the core, dark-gray sand layers are repeatedly deposited. Sand layers may exhibit an erosional surface at…

  • Tsunami Deposit and Environmental Change Associated with the 1498 Meio Earthquake Recorded at Yonezu Pond, Hamamatsu City, Japan

Open Access•Osamu Fujiwara, Kosuke Ota et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography (Chigaku…•2023

Array coring survey at the site of Yonezu Pond, which is depicted on a 1680s map, revealed a sand bed deposited by a tsunami caused by the 1498 CE Meio Earthquake occurred in the eastern Nankai Trough. This sand bed consists mainly of medium-grained sand, 10-15 cm thick, forming large ripples or dunes that record the reversal of tsunami inundation and return flows. Our age model based on radiocarbon dating limits the depositional timing of the sa…

  • Mid- to late-Holocene marine inundations inferred from coastal deposits facing the Nankai Trough in Nankoku, Kochi Prefecture, southern Japan

    Open Access•Koichiro Tanigawa, Masanobu Shishikura et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•References: 2

This study investigates the Holocene sedimentary history of a small coastal lowland in Nankoku, Kochi Prefecture, on the coast of southern Japan facing the Nankai Trough. The sedimentary fill of the lowland area consists mainly of marine-brackish clay overlain by beds of freshwater clay and peat. We found four laterally extensive sand sheets, one directly underlying the freshwater deposits and the other three interbedded with them. Radiocarbon da…

  • Historical Nankai-Suruga megathrust earthquakes recorded by tsunami and terrestrial mass movement deposits on the Shirasuka coastal lowlands, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan

    Open Access•Ed Garrett, Osamu Fujiwara et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Geological investigations of coastal sediment sequences play a key role in verifying earthquake and tsunami characteristics inferred from historical records. In this paper, we present a multi-proxy investigation of a coastal lowland site facing the Nankai-Suruga megathrust and appraise evidence for tsunamis and earthquake-triggered terrestrial mass movements occurring over the last 800 years. Combining a high-resolution chronology with X-ray comp…

  • Microfossil evidence for recurrent coseismic subsidence around Lake Hamana, near the Nankai-Suruga trough, central Japan

    Open Access•Yoshiki Sato, Osamu Fujiwara•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Paleoecological evidence for coastal subsidence during five great earthquakes in the past 1500 years along the northern onshore continuation of the Nankai subduction zone

Open Access•Osamu Fujiwara, Shigehiro Fujino et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • Assessing the impact of 1498 Meio earthquake and tsunami along the Enshu-nada coast, central Japan using coastal geology

Osamu Fujiwara, Eisuke Ono et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Identifying possible tsunami deposits on the Shizuoka Plain, Japan and their correlation with earthquake activity over the past 4000 years

    Open Access•Akihisa Kitamura, Osamu Fujiwara et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•References: 5

Three washover sand beds, ranging from 15 to 34 cm in thickness, were recorded in a lagoonal mud sequence on the Shizuoka coast of central Japan, which faces the Suruga Trough. The sand beds were composed of well-sorted and well-rounded beach sand derived by a marine inundation. The basal erosion surface, mud clasts, and presence of both inverse and normal grading suggest that the sand beds formed as a result of high-energy deposition. The sand b…

  • The impact of the 1498 Meio earthquake on the river Hamana, Enshunada coastline, Central Japan

    Open Access•Osamu Fujiwara•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Marine incursions of the past 1500 years and evidence of tsunamis at Suijin-numa, a coastal lake facing the Japan Trench

    Open Access•Yuki Sawai, Yushiro Fujii et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Sandy deposits of marine origin underlie the floor of Suijin-numa, a coastal lake midway along the subduction zone marked by the Japan Trench. The deposits form three units that are interbedded with lacustrine peat and mud above a foundation of marine, probably littoral sand. Unlike the lacustrine deposits, all three sandy units contain marine and brackish diatoms. The middle unit (B) contains, in addition, graded beds suggestive of multiple wave…
