  • Finance and Market Concentration Using Agent-Based Modeling: Evidence from South Korea

Open Access•Yunkyeong Seo, Zeynep Altiner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2025

This study investigates the role of finance in shaping the global trend of increasing market concentration.Using agent-based modeling (ABM), we conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses to examine the impact of financial policies on market concentration.Additionally, we analyze their simultaneous effects on economic growth and labor income share as key macroeconomic indicators.Building upon the Keynes meets Schumpeter (K+S) model, we conduct …

  • Integrating the effects of shift and persist coping strategies on mental health: Evidence from an internal meta‐analysis in a Japanese population

Open Access•Sumin Lee, Akihiro Toya et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Journal Of Social Psychology•2025

This study evaluates the applicability of the Shift‐and‐Persist (SAP) theory, focusing on the Japanese population. The SAP theory postulates that combining ‘shifting’ (adapting to stressors) and ‘persisting’ (enduring adversity with optimism) promotes resilience across physical, physiological, and psychological outcomes. Despite the theoretical appeal of SAP theory, empirical evidence supporting its effectiveness in mental health, particularly in…

  • Can online interactions reduce loneliness in young adults during university closures in Japan? The directed acyclic graphs approach

Open Access•Kohei Kambara, Akihiro Toya et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Journal Of Social Psychology•2025

As a countermeasure to the increased loneliness induced by the COVID‐19 pandemic‐related university closures, universities provided students with online interaction opportunities. However, whether these opportunities contributed to reducing loneliness during the university closures remains unclear, as previous studies have produced contradictory findings. We conducted a nationwide cross‐sectional survey. Data were collected on demographics, socia…

  • Military Experience and Casualty Sensitivity in Elite Discourse: Evidence From the U.S. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

    Open Access•Michael R Kenwick, Sumin Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2025•References: 32

Veterans are disproportionately represented among political elites, and the question of whether military experience shapes their behavior is a central puzzle in the study of international relations. Existing theories link military experience with hawkish or dovish foreign policy preferences. Rather than determining their positions on the use of force ex ante, we argue that domain-specific knowledge and their elevated social status will make veter…

  • Shift‐and‐Persist Strategy: Tendencies and Effect on Japanese Parents and Children's Mental Health 1,2,3

Open Access•Sumin Lee, Haruka Shimizu et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2024

Low socioeconomic status has various adverse effects on health, which can be mitigated through the shift‐and‐persist (S‐P) strategy. Studies have focused on how this strategy can affect health in the face of adversity. However, that children learn this strategy from positive role models, such as parents, is an unexamined precondition of the theory. This study presents one bit of supporting evidence for this precondition by examining the similarit…

  • Guarea microcarpa C. DC. extract inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome by suppressing its ATPase activity

Open Access•Sojung Lee, Sojin Yun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2024

Our results demonstrate the anti-inflammatory effects of GM via suppressing the NLRP3 inflammasome. Therefore, GM can be a potential therapeutic candidate for various inflammatory diseases caused by aberrant NLRP3 inflammasome activation

  • Using Text as Data to Reveal Changing Organizational Perspectives on Violence Against Women in the United States

    Open Access•Sumin Lee, A Messamore et al.•ARTICLE•Social Currents•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 28

Public understanding of violence against women, and appropriate solutions to tackling gender-based violence, have changed enormously over the past 50 years. In this paper, we study how violence against women is practically understood through organizational efforts to frame and combat it in the United States. We use topic modeling and dictionary-based content analysis to explore the missions and programming of 918 service and advocacy nonprofits d…

  • Punish or tolerate? State capacity, military oversight, and wartime sexual violence

    Sumin Lee, Andrey Tomashevskiy•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 24

How does government oversight of the military affect the occurrence of wartime sexual violence? This paper highlights the role of civil-military relations and state capacity in the occurrence of sexual violence. Building on research that examines wartime sexual violence in the principal-agent framework, we propose a game-theoretic model in which the military deploys wartime sexual violence based on its expectation of government oversight. We desc…

  • New digital safety net or just more ‘friendfunding’? Institutional analysis of medical crowdfunding in the United States

    Open Access•Sumin Lee, Vili Lehdonvirta•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2022

Crowdfunding is becoming a popular way of financing healthcare. Some commentators suggest that crowdfunding could serve as a new institution that fills gaps in conventional safety nets. Others suggest that crowdfunding is simply another way of obtaining help from family, friends, and local associations, and has little transformative potential. We provide one of the first quantitative analyses of medical crowdfunding, and the first to model the br…

  • OpenStreetMap data for alcohol research: Reliability assessment and quality indicators

    Open Access•J Bright, Stef De Sabbata et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 6

There is a growing interest in using OpenStreetMap [OSM] data in health research. We evaluate the usefulness of OSM data for researching the spatial availability of alcohol, a field which has been hampered by data access difficulties. We find OSM data is about 50% complete, which appears adequate for replicating findings from other studies using alcohol licensing data. Further, we show how OSM quality metrics can be used to select areas with more…

  • Geodemographic biases in crowdsourced knowledge websites: Do neighbours fill in the blanks

Open Access•J Bright, Stef De Sabbata et al.•ARTICLE•GeoJournal•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Crowdsourced knowledge websites such as Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap are increasingly attracting a critical literature which has highlighted the fact that the contributor bases of these sites are often geodemographically biased: drawn from more affluent and better educated segments of the population. However, while bias in contributors is well known, we know less about whether this also results in a bias in outcomes on these websites: or whether t…
