  • Maxakalí Nasality and Field Recording with Earbud Microphony

Open Access•Andrew Nevins, Andrew Ira Nevins et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Estudos da Linguagem•2017•Cited by: 1

The challenges in verifying vowel nasalization acoustically are well-known, and for this reason many researchers have opted for the use of nasal airflow masks. Such equipment, however, is not always affordable for recordings or projects conducted in the field. In the present article, we apply the recently developed technology of earbud recordings in Stewart & Kohlberger (2017) to the study of nasality in Maxakalí as a new method in experimental f…

  • The Grammars of Conjunction Agreement in Slovenian

Open Access•Franc Marušič, Andrew Nevins et al.•ARTICLE•Syntax•2015•Cited by: 25•References: 23

In this paper we report on the results of five experiments documenting the existence of three distinct grammars of conjunct agreement in Slovenian, found both within and across individuals: agreement with the highest conjunct, agreement with the closest conjunct, or agreement with the Boolean Phrase itself. We show that this variation is constrained and that some of these mechanisms can be blocked and/or forced depending on the properties of the …

  • Overwriting Does Not Optimize in Nonconcatenative Morphology

    Andrew Nevins, Andrew Ira Nevins•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Overwriting is modeled in Optimality Theory as a competition for a position within the derivational base (Alderete et al. 1999, Ussishkin 1997). Faithfulness constraints that are evaluated on the basis of segment counting predict a typology of languages in which (a) optimization dictates that the relative size of the affixal material determines whether it will win out and "overwrite" the base, and (b) optimization ensures that if both the affix a…
