Polish Conductresses and the Insecurities of Female Labour Migration to France, 1925–1929
In this article we argue that the reports of conductresses accompanying female migrants shed new light on the nature of interwar labour migration. As they mitigated the anxiety and insecurity that women faced during the process of migration, they fulfilled a crucial role in the highly restrictive post-1918 international migration regime. The Polish government introduced conductresses in 1925 to respond to news of the mistreatment and sexual explo…
The Catastrophe of the Present and That of the Future
To understand the mindset that obstructed the paths out of the interwar crisis, we need to reconstruct widely held expectations for the future of states. To examine how such expectations changed, diverged and competed, this paper investigates the work of inquiry committees, ranging from British and German committees engaged in post-war economic planning to the League of Nation's Commission of Enquiry for European Union of the early 1930s. The pap…
Trieste and Danzig after the Great War
This article reconstructs the consequences of the loss of hinterlands for the port cities of Trieste and Danzig after the Great War, as well as the consequences of the (often conflict-ridden) integration of those hinterlands into new territories. How did these changes reconfigure the relationship of port cities and hinterlands, of port cities and the state, and of ports vis-à-vis each other? Against the background of the instability of the postwa…
Fragmentation in East Central Europe
The First World War led to a radical reshaping of Europe’s political borders like hardly any previous event. Nowhere was this transformation more profound than in East Central Europe, where the collapse of imperial rule led to the emergence of a series of new states. New borders intersected centuries-old networks of commercial, cultural, and social exchange. The new states had to face the challenges posed by territorial fragmentation and at the s…
A Methodical Approach for Systematic Life Cycle Assessment of Wood‐Based Furniture
Existing life cycle assessment (LCA) studies for furniture focus on single pieces of furniture and use a bottom‐up approach based on their bill of materials (BOM) to build up the data inventories. This approach does not ensure completeness regarding material and energy fluxes and representativeness regarding the product portfolio. Integrating material and energy fluxes collected at company level into product LCA ( top‐down approach ) over‐rides t…
An orgy of licence?” Democracy and property redistribution in Poland and the Baltics in their international context, 1918–1926
The article argues that property redistribution was a major tool of democratization and nationalization in Poland and the Baltics. It provided governments with a means to give peasants a stake in the new democratic states, thus empower the new titular nations and at the same time marginalize former elites, who became national minorities. The most significant acts of property redistribution were the land reforms passed between 1919 and 1925, which…
Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis of Life Cycle Assessments for Wood Energy Services
Environmental impacts of the provision of wood energy have been analyzed through life cycle assessment (LCA) techniques for many years. Systems for the generation of heat, power, and combined heat and power (CHP) differ, and methodological choices for LCA can vary greatly, leading to inconsistent findings. We analyzed factors that promote these findings by conducting a systematic review and meta‐analysis of existing LCA studies for wood energy se…

Environmental breaches and resource losses in a Mexican biosphere reserve and development of a simple resource management model
The causes for environmental breaches producing losses to the forest resources in the biosphere reserve Mariposa Monarca in Mexico have been investigated, mainly using methods of spatial analysis. It was demonstrated that the availability of forest resources themselves does not affect the frequency of breaches but does have consequences on the amount of resource loss per breach. Furthermore, a strong dependency on the traffic ways was demonstrate…
