  • Property, Lawfare, and the Politics of Hope in Weak States

    Regine A Spector•ARTICLE•Polity•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 49

This article asks why property claimants bring their cases to court in authoritarian regimes when many perceive the system to be corrupt and coopted by more powerful political players. An in-depth case study in Kyrgyzstan shows how an elite property claimant (Azim) sought to build authority for his property claims and to facilitate their continued salience in fluid political contexts by taking cases to court. Although Azim filed and won cases, th…

  • A regional production network in a predatory state: Export-oriented manufacturing at the margins of the law

    Regine A Spector•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 25

As middle-income countries have grown their manufacturing sectors considerably over recent decades, attention has turned to countries that fall at the bottom of the industrial ladder. In such countries, challenges related to corruption combined with intensely competitive pressures from China and other countries appear to preclude possibilities for state leaders and bureaucracies to engineer industrial growth. Drawing upon an original survey of 22…

  • Manufacturing and Migration in Eurasia

    Regine A Spector•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article investigates the social foundations of apparel manufacturing in Kyrgyzstan. Drawing upon interviews and a survey of Bishkek-based workshop owners, a bottom-up analysis finds that many are family businesses that started producing clothing after the country’s independence in 1991. I discuss here how they acquired the capital and knowledge necessary for this business, and how they mobilised a variety of migration-related experiences and…

  • Order at the Bazaar: Power and Trade in Central Asia

    Regine A Spector•BOOK•Order at the Bazaar•2017

  • New shop owners in old buildings: Spatial politics of the apparel industry in Kyrgyzstan

    Regine A Spector, Aisalkyn Botoeva•ARTICLE•Post-Soviet Affairs•2016•References: 16

This article adopts a political economy approach with insights from the political geography literature to illuminate how the apparel manufacturing sector in Kyrgyzstan has thrived in a region known for significant challenges in electricity access and availability. In contrast to studies that have analyzed the role of state policies and informal relations in promoting industrialization, we focus on how myriad shop owners gain access to elite-contr…

  • Sewing to satisfaction: Craft-based entrepreneurs in contemporary Kyrgyzstan

    Aisalkyn Botoeva, Regine A Spector•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This article focuses on the reassembling of apparel production in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan. We contribute to this special issue on well-being in Central Asia by examining how individual craft-based apparel producers (a subset of producers in the apparel industry) describe the process through which they built upon their Soviet past and reoriented their professional trajectories in a new competitive market environment. These producers locate professi…

  • Bazaar Politics: The Fate of Marketplaces in Kazakhstan

    Regine A Spector•ARTICLE•Problems of Post-Communism•2008•Cited by: 5

Bazaars thrive and close based more on the whims of powerful political and economic elites than the activities of vendors and buyers

  • Securing Property in Contemporary Kyrgyzstan

    Regine A Spector•ARTICLE•Post-Soviet Affairs•2008•Cited by: 21•References: 18

Throughout the post-Soviet region, conflicts over property feature prominently in local headlines and public debates. This article explores ownership conflicts in contemporary Kyrgyzstan by asking why some marketplaces (bazaars) have remained stable and relatively secure in an environment characterized by weak rule of law and ongoing asset redistribution. Using data from field research conducted in 2006-2007, including interviews, newspaper artic…

  • Central Asia: More than Islamic extremists

    Svante E Cornell, Svante Cornell et al.•ARTICLE•The Washington Quarterly•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Many have viewed Central Asia as a region beset by an Islamic tide. U.S. policy that lacks understanding of the dynamics in Central Asia may exacerbate an already fragile situation and allow the Western‐prophesied “Islamic tide” to swallow the region
