    Oscar E Swan•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2017

Father Jędrzej Kitowicz (1728–1804) bequeathed to posterity two major works, Opis obyczajów za panowania Augusta III (Description of Customs During the Reign of August III) and Pamiętniki czyli historia polska (Memoirs, or a History of Poland), the first being a colorful depiction of customs during the middle of the eighteenth century under the reign of the last elected Saxon king, August III (reigned 1734–1763). • Polish 'Partner Nouns

    Oscar E Swan•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2015

This paper examines the varieties and gender status of ‘partner nouns’ in Polish, including wujostwo ‘uncle and wife’, profesorostwo ‘professor and wife’, and other such nouns which belong to a dying breed of nouns referring to marital partners. As small as this class of nouns is, their examination raises several issues. Among other things it involves us in an examination of whether or not partner nouns can combine with numerals, for on this ques…

  • The Polish Duel and Its Last Apologia

    Oscar E Swan, Oscar Swan•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2013

The "code of honor" as most people know it is a set of assumptions and expectations about what a person is entitled–indeed, is obliged by social custom–to do when "insulted" in order to preserve his personal self-respect and public dignity. In a word, to defend his "honor"–leading in more serious instances (nowadays, mostly in novels and films) to challenging one’s offender to a duel. However, few in our time would know how to stage a duel if cal…

INTRODUCTION. 'Grammatical' gender is a largely semantically empty noun trait whose existence is typically revealed through the triggering of agreement rules on the part of items in a sentence with which the noun is in construction. For example, the fact that the Latin word res is feminine in gender requires that the modifying adjective public- take the feminine ending -a. 'Natural' gender refers to perceptual categories with which people tend to…
