The Past is Ever Present: Transnationalism Old and New – Italian and Mexican Immigrants in the US
The paper focuses on what is old and what is new in transnationalism by analyzing extraterritorial attempts of the Italian and Mexican governments. During the large southern/ eastern European immigration to the US from 1890 to the 1920s, Italian immigrants reached 24 percent of the immigrant wave. Undocumented childhood immigrants, the Dream Act and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals in the USA
Purpose – The purpose of this article is to critically examine two possible solutions to the lack of citizenship rights of children who lack documentation. Many industrialized countries must deal with undocumented children who have resided in the country most of their lives. In the USA, immigrants brought as children by their parents illegally are not eligible to receive financial help in most states for higher education, receive federal health c…

This article traces the factors that led to the adoption of the Charter of the French Language in Quebec in 1977 and the Latvian Language Law in 1999. Concerns for the French language in Quebec in the 1960s and 1970s, the Latvian language in the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, and in the Latvian state in the 1990s were ignited by some of the same demographic and assimilative forces in the two societies.
