Testing a Model of Teacher Satisfaction for Blacks and Whites
The purpose of this study was to construct and test a model of the influences affecting early-career teachers’ job satisfaction. The path model is presented and tested first with a sample of black teachers and then with a sample of white teachers. Although the model provides a plausible explanation for the relationships among the variables for both groups, differences in the structural coefficients indicate the process leading to teacher job sati…
Women's Selection of Quantitative Undergraduate Fields of Study: Direct and Indirect Influences
To increase women's representation among quantitative degrees, Berryman (1985) suggested two strategies: Increase women's share of the initial mathematical/scientific pool or reduce attrition from the pool. Current research indicates, however, that the decision to enter a quantitative field of study for women is the result of a complex interaction of many factors. This study examined the manner in which these factors influence women's choice of u…
Enduring Cognitive Effects of Public and Private Schools
Recent research by Coleman and his associates on the effectiveness of public and private schools has evoked a heated debate on the role of private schooling in U.S. education. All of the existing studies, however, have examined the short-term effects of school type–at most over a 2-year period. This study extends the debate on the effects of private schools to a longer term perspective. It appears from the present analysis that the enduring influ…
Within-Variable, between Occasion Error Covariances in Models of Educational Achievement
To correct for the effects of measurement error on structural parameter estimates, many researchers are now estimating models of educational achievement with LISREL. In order to estimate such models it is desirable to obtain multiple manifest measures of the latent constructs. Many researchers restrict their models to two manifest measures per latent construct for reasons of economy, but doing so assumes in the absence of external information tha…

A Structural Model of Mathematics Achievement for Men and Women
An extensive body of research indicates that men on the average achieve higher scores in mathematics than women. This paper addresses the issue of how this difference develops by estimating a latent-construct causal model of the process of mathematics achievement. When the model was compared between men and women, we found that the process of mathematics achievement differs. In particular, we found that mathematics ability and attitudes toward ma…
Seine: Standard Errors of Indirect Effects
In his early exposition of path analysis, Duncan (1966, p. 7) noted that the method "provides a calculus for indirect effects." Despite the interest in indirect causal effects, most users treat them as if they are population parameters and do not test whether they are statistically significant. Sobel (1982) has recently derived the asymptotic distribution of indirect effects. This paper describes a new FORTRAN IV computer program that provides th…
Postsecondary Educational Attainment among Whites and Blacks
Previous research has indicated that social background variables are more important determinants of educational attainment among whites than among blacks. The present study, based on more recent data and methods that control for estimated measurement error structures, finds that social background plays a similar role for whites and blacks. Increments in background social status variables lead to similar increases in educational attainment for whi…
Socialist Voting among Coal Miners, 1900–1940
It is the intent of this paper to identify some economic factors that can explain the fluctuation of socialist voting among coal miners. Of the several models tested, the most plausible one relates level of wage to level of vote. Once coal miners attained an adequate standard of living, their interest in radical politics apparently waned. The results do not explain why the level of support accorded the socialists was so small relative to the more…
Radical-Party Politics in Illinois, 1880-1924
Sufficient impressionistic evidence exists in the previous literature to warrant a detailed consideration of the voting behavior of working-class and minority groups in relation to radical third parties. The present paper is concerned with analyzing some of the sources of support for radical third parties in Illinois from 1880 to 1924. We find that a coalition between a rural proletariat and the urban working class appeared to be a potentially vi…

Strategies of Path Analysis
Path analysis is a method for explicitly formulating theory, and attaching quantitative estimates to causal effects thought to exist on a priori grounds. There are four basic kinds of path models: recursive, block, block-recursive, and nonrecursive. Because some questions can be answered only under certain path analytic structures, the theoretical questions and research goals guide the selection of a particular model. Knowing what sorts of questi…
The Enduring Effects of Education on Verbal Skills
While there is abundant evidence to indicate that students make significant gains in verbal skills within school, surprisingly little is known about cognitive outcomes once individuals are separated from educational institutions. This paper develops a working causal model of the enduring effects of education which extends and elaborates Hyman, Wright and Reed's (1975) analysis. Unlike previous studies, the model developed here includes the estima…
