Racial and Ethnic Differences in Women's Retirement Security
Women face a greater risk of poverty than men as they get older, but this risk varies considerably by race and ethnicity. Using data from the Census Bureau's 2002–2005 March Current Population Surveys, this article examines racial and ethnic differences in women's retirement security, with special attention given to differences in their marital status and living arrangements in old age. Mobility from Part-Time to Full-Time Employment Among Kentucky Welfare Leavers
In this article we analyze mobility from part-time to fulltime employment among a panel of welfare leavers in Kentucky from 1998 to 2001. Using discrete-time hazard analysis, the study tests human capital, situational, and structural variables to determine which factors explain mobility. Among all panel participants, those who acquired full-time employment were more likely to reside outside Appalachia, to be high school graduates, to have had som…

The contributions in this Explorations section reveal differences across countries in the support systems of the elderly and shows that poverty among the elderly has not been eliminated, even in rich countries. Social insurance systems with an adequate minimum benefit do the best job of avoiding poverty among elderly women.
