The rise and fall of ordoliberalism
Ordoliberalism has been accused of being the ideational blueprint for Germany's fiscal stance during the Eurozone-crisis. While the literature that debates the influence of ordoliberalism on crisis politics is growing, there is a lack of studies tracing the ordoliberal influence within Germany. This study shows that ordoliberalism had very limited influence on the creation of German institutions and its economic knowledge regime. Where ordolibera…
Public broadcasting and democracy’s defense
This article studies the response by public sphere institutions in democratic societies to far-right parties, focusing specifically on public broadcasting organizations in Germany and Sweden. With the upsurge of far-right parties these types of institutions are faced with difficult decisions on how to balance norms of inclusivity, impartiality and pluralism while also safeguarding substantive norms related to the protection of equal human dignity…
The Social Market Economy and Ordoliberalism—A Difficult Relationship
While there is a sprawling literature that debates the influence of Ordoliberalism on crisis and Euro politics, there is a striking lack of studies outside of the German-speaking social sciences that trace the Ordoliberal influence within Germany. Someone who associates German political action to Ordoliberal ideas has to put up with a striking paradox: how is it that most of the institutions that constitute the German political economy are of the…
A community of shared values? Dimensions and dynamics of cultural integration in the European Union
The series of recent crises (EURO, refugees, backsliding, Brexit) challenge the self-portrayal of the European Union (EU) as a community of shared values. Against this backdrop, we analyse European Values Study data from 1990 till 2020 to assess the level and change in publics’ acceptance of the EU’s officially propagated values: personal freedom, individual autonomy, social solidarity, ethnic tolerance, civic honesty, gender equality and liberal…
Where Does Europe End? Christian Democracy and the Expansion of Europe
In this article, we argue that an analysis of the conflict around the nature and limits of European integration that arose between Catholic and Protestant Christian Democrats in the post‐war era can shed new light on the expansionary dynamics that gradually came to characterize the project of European integration. Catholic Christian Democrats framed the unification of Europe as a relatively exclusionary cultural‐civilizational endeavour, while Pr…
Cultural Political Economy and Conflicts Law – A new way to approach the Eurozone crisis
The immediate effects of the Euro crisis have been tamed but the crisis has soured the relations between Southern and Northern Member states for many years to come. Comparative political economy explains the frictions between North and South as a result of different institutional configurations of national economies (Varieties of Capitalism), different interests of capital and labor coalitions (growth model perspective) or ideational traditions (…
Culture and tax avoidance
Culture is increasingly used as an explanatory variable for tax evasion. So far, we know, however, little about the mechanisms that link culture and tax behavior. This paper is a historical-sociological study of how religion influences tax behavior. The contribution focuses on the Italian case, among Western-European countries one with the highest evasion rates. It argues that the willingness of Italians to pay their taxes still suffers today fro…
Cultural Political Economy
So far, the Euro crisis has been analysed using the ‘varieties of capitalism’ concept, the growth model framework or ideational accounts. These approaches have generally been applied in isolation or in opposition to one another. There has been little cross‐fertilization, due to the different epistemological points of departure that emphasize either institutional rational efficiency, material driving forces or ideational motives for the political …
European integration and the reconstitution of socio-economic ideologies
Christian Democratic socio-economic ideology underwent a paradigm shift through the Europeanization of its party networks. Christian Democratic networks started with a distinctive Catholic socio-economic ideology emphasizing corporatism, welfare transfers and a coordination of the economy. This institutional blueprint influenced the early years of European socio-economic integration. The original social Catholicism was gradually replaced by Prote…
The Rise of Faith-Based Welfare Providers in Germany and Its Consequences
Since the 1970s welfare organisations operated by the churches in Germany have evolved into the country’s largest employers. While church affiliation and attendance dropped sharply, the churches grew as employers. Caritas and Diakonie, the two largest faith-based welfare providers, enjoy a special status as ecclesiastical employers. They can dismiss employees that do not live in congruence with their worldview such as homosexuals, those who have …
The Religious Foundations of the European Crisis
There has been much talk about ordoliberalism recently. Scholars and the press identify it as the dominant economic instruction sheet for Germany's European crisis politics. However, by analyzing ordoliberalism only as an economic theory, the debate downplays that ordoliberalism is also an ethical theory, with strong roots in Protestant social thought. It is this rooting in Protestant social thought that makes Ordoliberalism incompatible with the…

The European Sovereign Debt Crisis and the Danger of Ideational Monocultures 1
From Private to Religious Patriarchy
Over one million people work for a faith-based welfare provider in Germany. Caritas and Diakonie, the largest faith-based providers in Germany enjoy prerogatives that do not exist in other countries. This particular group of faith-based organizations is exempt from federal labor law and discrimination clauses, which results in arbitrary, and in other cases, institutional, forms of discrimination against particular social groups in society. Resear…
