  • Maternal health, well-being, and employment transitions

    Open Access•Marlu Kühn, Christian Dudel et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Research•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 85

Balancing parenthood and employment can be challenging and distressing, particularly for single mothers. At the same time, transitioning to employment can improve the financial situations of single mothers and provide them with access to social networks, which can have beneficial effects on their health and well-being. Currently, however, it is not well understood whether the overall impact of employment on single mothers is positive or negative,…

  • Income-dependent equivalence scales

Open Access•Jan Marvin Garbuszus, Notburga Ott et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2021•References: 3

Income inequality and poverty risks receive a lot of attention in public debates and current research. To make income comparable across different types of households, applying the “(modified) OECD scale” – an equivalence scale with fixed weights for each household type – has become a quasi-standard in research. Instead, we derive a base-dependent equivalence scale allowing for scale weights that vary with income, building on micro-data from Germa…

  • Familiengerechtigkeit in der sozialen Pflegeversicherung

    Open Access•Miriam Beblo, Margarete Schuler-Harms et al.•ARTICLE•Sozialer Fortschritt•2020

Christian Dudel, Jan Marvin Garbuszus et al.•ARTICLE•Sozialer Fortschritt•2017

  • Children are costly, but raising them may pay

    Open Access•Martin Werding•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2014•Cited by: 8•References: 48

This article provides a non-technical introduction to analyses of fertility which are based on a rational-choice paradigm and which acknowledge that raising children may have a strong impact on the well-being of parents that can be described in terms of co

  • Sozialleistungsbezug und Erwerbsanreize

    Martin Werding, Wolfgang Meister•ARTICLE•Sozialer Fortschritt•2011

  • Why Go to France or Germany, if You Could as Well Go to the UK or the US? Selective Features of Immigration to the EU ‘Big Three’ and the United States

Open Access•Wido Geis, Silke Uebelmesser et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2011•Cited by: 9•References: 18

Building on a new data set which is constructed from a combination of national micro-data bases, we highlight differences in the structure of migrants to four countries – namely, France, Germany, the UK and the US – which receive a substantial share of all immigrants to the OECD world. Looking at immigrants by source country, we illustrate the important role of distance, both geographical and cultural, immigration policies and migrant networks. D…

  • Humankapital in Deutschland

Christian Holzner, Martin Werding et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Humankapital in Deutschland•2009

  • On the Optimal Timing of Implicit Social Security Taxes Over the Life Cycle

Robert Fenge, Martin Werding et al.•ARTICLE•FinanzArchiv•2006

Are there still opportunities for welfare-improving reforms in unfunded pension systems? To answer this question, we analyze the intertemporal structure of implicit taxes in pay-as-you-go pension schemes. We demonstrate that these tax rates are declining over the life cycle. This timing is optimal if periodic wage elasticities of labor supply are inversely related to the tax structure. Using German micro data for men and married women, we estimat…
