Parent‐Reported Academic Outcomes After a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in the Pediatric Population
BACKGROUND: Millions of children are diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year, most being mild TBI (mTBI). The effect of mTBIs on academic performance is of significant importance. We investigate mTBI's impact on parent-reported academic outcomes in school-aged pediatric participants. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey study queried parents (N = 285) regarding letter grade performance and the presence or absence of academic accom…
Young migrants, “integration” and the local: Critical reflections from European stakeholders
This article examines the complexities of integrating young adult migrants from non-EU countries into European contexts, advocating for a shift toward inclusive, locally informed, and reciprocal integration processes. It critiques state-centric, assimilationist frameworks that emphasize an imagined national identity and Western norms of youth transitions, neglecting local nuances and diverse migrant experiences. Through findings from a European D…
Creating New Understandings of Migration-Related Vulnerabilities Through Youth-Led Peer Research Using Intergenerational Focus Groups
Participatory research methods are particularly appropriate when working with marginalised groups in vulnerable conditions, including migrant youth who are widely seen as confronting a range of vulnerabilities. This article draws on research undertaken with migrant youth as peer-researchers, between 2020 and 2023 in England and Sweden, to explore how young people can learn from earlier generations in navigating vulnerabilities and to build knowle…
The Impact of Temporary Residence Permits on Young Refugees' Abilities to Build a Life in Sweden
Drawing on interviews with young refugees, 20-30 years old, mainly from Syria and Afghanistan, we discuss the effects that temporary residence permits have on their ability to build a life in Sweden. The article includes both unaccompanied and accompanied youth that at some point had been given temporary residence permits. These permits could later be renewed or turned into permanent permits if the youth fulfilled certain tough requirements. Thro…
Migrants and Swedish Activists in Solidarity: Pro-Asylum Activism as a Pathway of Political Socialisation in Malmö
The article examines how pro-asylum activism contributes to the political socialisation of precarious migrants who become activists, and how it facilitates their social and spatial emplacement in a particular locality. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2013–2016 in the city of Malmö, an important site of pro-asylum and anti-racist activism in Sweden, the article analyses how some migrants re-establish their lives by building social r…
The Capital of Love”: Activists Resisting the Stigmas of Malmö through Storytelling
This article examines the effects of an anti‐racist narrative of a neighbourhood in Malmö, an important site of pro‐migrant and anti‐racist activism in Sweden. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2013–2016, the article analyses how this narrative was constructed as an effort to challenge the “crime‐due‐to‐immigration‐discourse” otherwise associated with Malmö and supported by far‐right political parties and their sympathisers in Sweden…
Alliances, friendships, and alternative structures: Solidarity among radical left activists and precarious migrants in Malmö
This paper examines relations between radical left activists with citizenship and migrants in precarious conditions. It is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2013–2016 in the city of Malmö, an important site of pro-migrant and anti-racist activism in Sweden. Examples discussed in the paper concern the prevalence of highly educated women among the activists, the engagement of LGBTQ activists, and the fact that many activists themselves h…
The Kuder Occupational Interest Inventory as a Moderator of its Predictive Validity
A measure of the extent to which the Kuder Occupational Interest Inventory (KOIS) was predictive of occupational membership for an individual was correlated with KOIS item and scale scores. KOIS items and scales were shown to moderate the 12 to 19 year predictive validity of the KOIS. Women with nontraditional interests were found to be relatively less predictable by the KOIS
