  • Improving Weight Bias Awareness Among Providers in the Sexual and Reproductive Health care Setting

Open Access•Monica Skoko Rodriguez, Julie Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2024

Introduction: Provider bias against patients of higher weights can contribute to poor health outcomes and decreased quality of care and patient experience. Addressing weight stigma in sexual and reproductive health settings is important, as these encounters can often be patients' only health care touchpoint. Health care providers must be educated about the harms of weight stigma, ways to recognize and confront their biases, and how to advocate fo…

  • Environmental Justice and the Mississippi Poultry Farming Industry

Open Access•Niya Khanjar, Jonathan Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Justice•2021

Mississippi's growing poultry business, including industrialized farms and meatpacking plants, raises a number of concerns regarding public health and environmental justice. Using hot spot analysis, we analyzed the totality of Mississippi's industrial poultry farms and meatpacking plants to assess whether these types of facilities were disproportionately sited in communities of color and/or low socioeconomic status communities at the census tract…

  • Exploration of associations between the FTO rs9939609 genotype, fasting and postprandial appetite-related hormones and perceived appetite in healthy men and women

    Open Access•Fernanda R Goltz, Alice E Thackray et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2019•References: 57

  • Evaluating youth character development programs using evolutionary evaluation and the systems evaluation protocol

Jennifer Brown Urban, Miriam R Linver et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2018

The importance of engaging in high quality program evaluation is a generally accepted principle underscored by external pressure from funders. High quality evaluation necessarily begins with good evaluation planning. This paper outlines Evolutionary Evaluation and specifically the Systems Evaluation Protocol, an approach that emphasizes practitioner-evaluator collaboration, results in tangible products for programs, and culminates in an evaluatio…

  • Teachers’ Unions, the Capitalist State and the Contradictions of Educational Reform

Carlos Alberto Torres, Daniel Schugurensky et al.•ARTICLE•Spirale - Revue de recherches en…•2013

This essay reports analytically some of the conclusions of a larger research project. It discusses the connections between teachers unions, their presence in civil societies, and their confrontation with State policies particularly under neoliberal regimes. It explores how teacher unions accumulate – through conflict and collaboration – political and social capital in the process of educational reform. Data from this paper resulted from five year…

  • Children's Accounts of Sibling Jealousy and Their Implicit Theories about Relationships

    Open Access•Julie Thompson, Julie A Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 6

In two studies, fifth‐ and sixth‐grade children's descriptive accounts of sibling jealousy were related to their implicit theories about relationships. Children's jealousy accounts were collected via structured interviews; their implicit theories were assessed by questionnaire. In both studies, children reported experiencing mild to moderate jealousy with diverted attention and favoritism as primary causes. In Study 1 (N = 63; M age = 11 years, 9…

  • Clustal W: Improving the sensitivity of progressive multiple sequence alignment through sequence weighting, position-specific gap penalties and weight matrix choice

Open Access•Julie Thompson, Julie D Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Nucleic Acids Research•1994

The sensitivity of the commonly used progressive multiple sequence alignment method has been greatly improved for the alignment of divergent protein sequences. Firstly, individual weights are assigned to each sequence in a partial alignment in order to down-weight near-duplicate sequences and up-weight the most divergent ones. Secondly, amino acid substitution matrices are varied at different alignment stages according to the divergence of the se…
