  • The Planetary Cultural Politics of Édouard Glissant

    Open Access•A Dawes, Antonia Lucia Dawes•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2026

This article explores the lessons for antiracism provided by Édouard Glissant’s philosophy of language. The late Martinican scholar (1928–2011) writes extensively about language in correspondence to core concepts in his thought, in particular Relation, opacity and the Whole-World. Through a reading of his essays, poems and novels, I argue that Glissant’s writing poses an ontological question about language which allows us to rethink our relations…

  • England’s military heartland

Ware, Vron Ware et al.•BOOK•England's Military Heartland•2025

  • Contact zones

Ware, Vron Ware et al.•CHAPTER•England's Military Heartland•2025

This chapter focuses on Tidworth itself, beginning at Station Road which is the commercial heart of the garrison. It identifies the places where people mix socially and reports on a range of conversations with residents. Approaching the project of military–civilian integration as a political initiative, it investigates certain places that bring people together, and observes how particular groups or communities interact. The topic of loneliness in…

  • Race Talk

  • Speaking back to power

    Open Access•A Dawes, Antonia Lucia Dawes•CHAPTER•Race Talk•2020

Chapter 7 explores the ways in which people in street markets actively organised to resist attempts by the State to take away their livelihoods. It looks at the antihegemonic talk through which improvisational and ambiguous forms of solidarity emerged across cultural and linguistic boundaries in the moments when people had to work together as part of an ambiguous, Gramscian-inspired local-popular, and speak back to power. It argues that the multi…

  • The possibilities and limits of impact and engagement in research on military institutions

    Open Access•Rachel Woodward, A Dawes et al.•ARTICLE•Area•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 25

Military geographical research often requires direct engagement with military institutions. Although the morality of such engagements is often debated, the details of engagement in practice have been less scrutinised. Scrutiny is important, as military engagements can shape research‐derived critiques and can influence the communication of research outcomes to both military and academic research communities. Military engagement comprises the commu…

  • The struggle for Via Bologna street market

    Open Access•A Dawes•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2019•References: 28

This paper is based on ethnographic research conducted with migrant and Italian street vendors in Naples, southern Italy, in 2012. It tells the story of Via Bologna market which was nearly closed down by the City Hall at the time. Naples is a city where issues of poverty and unemployment pre-date and have been exacerbated by manifold narratives of crisis now unfolding across Europe regarding the economy, political legitimacy, security and migrati…

  • Talking English to talk about difference

    A Dawes•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This qualitative empirical study explores the articulation of meanings about difference, belonging and positionality that are emerging in English talk across transcultural boundaries in Naples, Southern Italy. It shows that the fraught encounters that take place on street markets, on public transport and at community events lead both to tactics of racialized closure, exclusion and division; as well as to the formation of innovative and ambivalent…

  • Reserve forces and the transformation of British military organisation

    Open Access•Timothy Edmunds, A Dawes et al.•ARTICLE•Defence Studies•2016•Cited by: 12•References: 5

In recent years there has been a sharp growth in political and sociological interest in the British military. Set against the backdrop of the armed forces increasing presence in everyday life, alongside the organizations’ ongoing restructuring, the current paper focuses on the MoD’s problematic attempts to recruit 30,000 Reservists by 2020; what has become known as the Future Reserves 2020 programme (FR2020). We argue that these changes are drive…

  • A Thematic Content Analysis of Psychologists' Reports in Child Custody Evaluations

    Open Access•Ricardo Brandt, A Dawes et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2004•References: 14

The key objective of this study was to examine empirically the substantive issues that inform psychologists' decision-making in custody evaluations. The study draws on a relatively small convenience sample of 39 reports from eight different psychologists who represented key informants in the field in Cape Town. Jameson, Ehrenberg and Hunter's (1997) Best Interests of the Child Assessment model was revised and used as a template for a thematic con…

  • Sociology

    Open Access•A Dawes, Alan Dawe•ARTICLE•Sociology•1978

Dr. Strasser and I are obviously poles apart and, from my viewpoint, his reply simply reaffirms his commitment to that version of theorizing my review challenged; especially in its last two paragraphs, the whole tenor of which is so exactly that of his book that, for me, they reinforce all the points I made about what I believe to be the real and representative significance of the latter. That apart, however, his reply is vitiated even in its own…
