An Enhanced Account of Relative Identity
This article gives a holistic re-examination of the semantic content and syntactic structure of the concept of relative identity: it suggests and explains an expanded and enhanced dual-track characterization of relative identity. It is expanded in this sense: its due coverage is not narrowly restricted to the equal-status case of identity statements (the symmetric case for identity simplex) but also includes the category-assimilating case (the as…
Cross-Tradition Engagement on the Laws of Logic
This book demonstrates how, through cross-tradition engagement, insights and engaging treatments from the Chinese philosophical tradition can work with relevant resources from modern logic and contemporary philosophy to enhance our understanding of two basic principles of logic: the law of identity and the law of non-contradiction. The law of identity and the law of non-contradiction are widely accepted principles in logic and other intellectual …
Comparative Philosophy as a General Way of Doing Philosophy Through Cross-Tradition Engagement Toward World Philosophy
In this theme essay for the addressed special-theme section in this special issue of the journal Comparative Philosophy commemorating the first anniversary of the International Society for Comparative Philosophy toward World Philosophy (CPWP), I intend to give an elaboration of the theme “comparative philosophy as a general way of doing philosophy through cross-tradition engagement toward world philosophy” (‘comparative philosophy toward world ph…
An Overall-Complementarity-Seeking Account that Includes and Transcends Harmonious-Complementarity-Seeking Perspective
In this paper, I have two related purposes in the context of this "constructiveengagement dialogue" section: first, I will present a further expanded version of my previously suggested and explained "overall-complementarity-seeking" account on the methodological issue of how to adequately look at (the tensions and conflicts of) contraries (including both non-mental contraries in the natural world and mental ideological contraries in the human soc…
A Holistic Account of Adequacy Conditions for How to Look at Contraries
The aim of this essay is to give a meta-philosophical and meta-methodological characterization of some central characteristic features comparative philosophy as a general way of doing philosophy through cross-tradition engagement toward world philosophy. This is elucidated by presenting a holistic account of the conditions for maintaining adequate methodological guiding principles for appropriately and effectively considering different approaches…

A Unifying Pluralist Account of Truth and the Case of Chinese Philosophy Examined from the Cross-Tradition Engaging Vantage Point
Li presents a very thoughtful and stimulating commentary essay (Li 2021) on some of the central ideas in my recent monograph book, Semantic-Truth Approaches in Chinese Philosophy: A Unifying Pluralist Account (Mou 2019). I consider this an extraordinarily valuable opportunity for my further learning and constructively engaging discussion on the jointly concerned philosophical issue of truth. Li raises philosophical interesting questions and offer…

Searle’s Philosophy and Chinese Philosophy
This volume investigates how, through critical engagement, the philosophy of John Searle in the Western analytic tradition and some thoughts and strands in Chinese philosophy can jointly contribute to the common philosophical enterprise and shows how such comparative methodology of constructive engagement is important or even indispensable in philosophical inquiry. The anthology includes Searle's keynote essay and 15 engaging pairs of essay-reply…

A Reexamination of the Structure and Content of Confucius' Version of the Golden Rule
For the purposes of interpretation and constructive engagement, the structure and content of Confucius' version of the Golden Rule (CGR) is examined by elaborating its three dimensions as suggested in the Analects. It is argued that the CGR, which consists of two intertwined central ideas in Confucius' ethics, shu and zhong, involves three interdependent and complementary dimensions: (1) the methodological (i.e., the methodological aspect of shu)…
Moral Rules and Moral Experience
In this article, through a comparative analysis of Dewey's and Laozi's relevant accounts, I examine a pragmatic insight concerning moral rules and moral experience to the effect that (i) fixed and formulated moral rules should not be taken as the final absolute moral authority, and (ii) attention needs to be paid to the moral agent's own moral experience that responds to the felt demands in concrete situations. The purpose of this paper is to enh…
The Enumerative Character Of Tarski's Definition Of Truth And Its General Character In A Tarskian System
The Structure of the Chinese Language and Ontological Insights
In this essay, through a comparative case analysis regarding the Chinese language, I will discuss how the structure and functions of a natural language would bear upon the ways in which some philosophical problems are posed and some ontological insights are shaped. In doing this, I suggest and argue for a mereological collectivenoun hypothesis about the denotational semantics of Chinese nouns. My discussion begins with a puzzle: why has the class…
