Living with Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger
This article contains the opening plenary address of the 2019 annual meeting of the American Society of Missiology. Its title leaves open the possibility that Ron Sider is talking about people rather than his book, Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger. But, indeed, his address was more about the book than rich Christians themselves, although they remain present in the wings, just off-stage. Dr. Sider’s controversial, landmark book was published in…
The Cfia Forum
Ronald Sider responds to Walter Russell Mead's Sept./Oct. 2006 Foreign Affairs article, “God's Country?” and criticizes Mead for not emphasizing the growth of the evangelical center. Not all evangelicals oppose science or uncritically support Israel, and many are branching out from the traditional single-issue politics that have been the evangelical's trademark. Many prominent evangelical leaders are becoming a vocal part of the evangelical cente…
Evaluating the Faith-Based Initiative
This essay outlines the basic provisions of the charitable choice legislation; sketches its brief history; spells out the strongest arguments for and against it; and argues that charitable choice is more at home within a Catholic political philosophy with its principle of subsidiarity or Dutch Kuyperianism than in the Lockean tradition. It concludes with a brief summary of why charitable choice is good public policy
Typology of Religious Characteristics of Social Service and Educational Organizations and Programs
The general term faith-based organizations is inadequate because no clear definition exists of what it means to be faith-based. This article proposes an inductively derived sixfold typology of social service and educational organizations and programs based on their religious characteristics: faith-permeated, faith-centered, faith-affiliated, faith background, faith-secular partnership, and secular. The typology is divided into two sections, organ…
The Freedom of Faith-Based Organizations to Staff on a Religious Basis
This work gives book-length treatment to a timely and pressing issue-the right of religious organizations receiving government funds to discriminate on of religion in employment. Aimed principally at faith-based organizations and government officials, this book makes case for that right while simultaneously explaining current arrangement in simple terms. Ultimately, it is a well organized, straightforward, and largely persuasive defense of religi…
Saving souls, serving society
As public funding for social services has been slashed, there has arisen an unprecedented interest in the potential (and dangers) of faith-based institutions as agents of social change. This text seeks to answer pressing questions surrounding this important and controversial issue
