  • Expulsion from the Garden of Eden

    Gudrun Bodin•ARTICLE•The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic…•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper uses the Biblical story of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden as a metaphor for the depressive position, wherein integration, development and maturation take place, and the confluence of hatred and love towards the object gives rise to sadness and guilt feelings. Adam and Eve took an important developmental step by eating fruit from the tree of knowledge, learning to distinguish between good and evil, but were banished from the Gard…

  • This is not psychoanalysis

    Open Access•Gudrun Bodin•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2004

When Freud founded the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), he wanted a network of local groups responsible for psychoanalytic training. The groups would function as ‘headquarters whose business it would be to declare: All this nonsense is nothing to do with analysis; this is not psychoanalysis. Today, with psychoanalytic pluralism, Tuckett (in press) has asked ‘Does anything go? He has pointed out that the psychoanalytic community h…

  • The value of infant observation in the psychoanalytic training

    Gudrun Bodin•ARTICLE•The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic…•1997•References: 1

The following case report is an attempt to describe how infant-mother observation is an exercise in a psychoanalytic mode of thinking and reacting, developing knowledge of object-relation theory. The aim of infant observation is not therapeutic; however, this paper suggests that it also might have a therapeutic side effect, creating mental space for the mother and thereby, helping her from becoming too engulfed by the intensive needs of the baby

  • Inhibiting the mentalizing capacities

    Gudrun Bodin•ARTICLE•The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This paper describes a phobic patient who inhibited her capacity to mentalize defensively in situations when emotionally overwhelmed. When provoked by anxiety, she used the ‘silencing-method’, not reflecting on her internal world or her relationships. In order to avoid painful thinking, she stopped mentalizing and used practical or physical activities as a psychic retreat from an unpleasant reality. In psychoanalysis, she developed a growing tole…
