  • Fifty years of the IFPS

    Jan Stensson•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•2014

Against the background of a condensed sketch of the psychotherapeutic tradition in Sweden, I indicate my own path to the International Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies (IFPS). The 1962 Forum, held in Amsterdam, at which the IFPS was founded, is depicted through a young man's eyes. Some viewpoints are given on the importance of the IFPS's existence. The development of the journal International Forum of Psychoanalysis is also described and co…

  • Inner freedom and independence

    Jan Stensson•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•2009

This interview, performed by e-mail from December 2007 to September 2008, covers the psychoanalytic itinerary of André Haynal. His emigration from Hungary to Switzerland gave him occasion to think about alienation and its significance for identity. Gustav Bally, among others, introduced André Haynal in the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society after a very special interview. Other encounters with prominent and interesting personalities such as Jean Piaget…

  • Some reflections on writing the history of the IFPS

    Jan Stensson•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•2007

A knowledge of the history of psychoanalysis strengthens our understanding of its concepts. A specific characteristic of psychoanalysis is that its creative development unfolds in confidential processes. One way to remedy this ‘basic fault’ is extensive and intensive interviews with analysts. In earlier times, collections of correspondence between analysts provided such information. There is very little material on the International Federation of…

  • Aniara, mimicry and aspect-seeing

    Jan Stensson•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•2006

The Swedish Nobel prize winner Harry Martinsson is introduced in this paper, and his epic science fiction poem Aniara is presented. Mima, a miraculous accessor and transmitter of information from all over the universe, is juxtaposed to Sandor Ferenczi's concept of mimicry and Wittgenstein's views on aspect-seeing. It is proposed that the Mima can be seen as a metaphor for the infant mind, having creative mimetic faculties. The single most importa…

  • On Writing Psychoanalysis

    Jan Stensson•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•2001

Questions regarding truth and evidence in psychoanalytic writing are discussed. Excerpts from recent texts by Betty Joseph and Michael Eigen are analyzed from the point of view of their use of language. While Joseph seems to aim at literal, representative descriptions, Eigen writes in a poetic, allegorical way. Some characteristics of allegorical writing are further outlined with reference to Schleiermacher's distinction between grammatical and m…

  • The Quest for Freedom and Human Concern

    Jan Stensson•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•1999

The forming and early development of the Swedish Society for Holistic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis is described. The influence of the personal background of those who formed the society, the general zeitgeist in which the society unfolded and the specific circumstances in the field of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Sweden at the actual time is paid attention to. The significance of Dr. Harold Kelman as a supervisor and teacher during the…

  • On the Nature of Human Relatedness

    Jan Stensson•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•1994

Freuds discussion of the “oceanic feeling” in The Civilization and its Discontents is reviewed. An alternative to Freud's genetic interpretation is suggested: a perception by the human mind of a basic aspect of human relatedness. David Bohm's implicate order, Kelman's kairos and communing and Bion's transformation in O and faith are discussed as examples of an understanding of human relatedness as fundamentally based on “being one with the extern…
