  • Brexit and migration

Open Access•Francesca Licari, Roberto Basile et al.•ARTICLE•Genus•2026

A substantial body of research has examined the impact of the June 2016 Brexit referendum from a UK-centred perspective. Much of this literature has focused on economic and social outcomes, with particular attention to migration. In this paper, we evaluate the causal impact of the uncertainty generated by the referendum on migration from the standpoint of a major country of origin—Italy, one of the principal sources of intra-EU flows to the UK. S…

  • Access to credit and economic complexity

Open Access•Roberto Basile, Luisa Giallonardo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2024

This paper focuses on the relationship between “urbanization economies” and access to bank credit by assessing the role of product variety and economic complexity in affecting local credit market conditions. Using quarterly data on Italian provinces for 2008–2018 and adopting a dynamic (spatial) econometric approach, the work provides robust evidence highlighting how local economic complexity reduces the barriers to accessing local credit markets…

  • The local labour market effects of earthquakes

Roberto Basile, Luisa Giallonardo et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Using a balanced panel of local labour market areas (LLMAs) and adopting a new difference-in-differences approach with multiple time periods and multiple groups, this paper assesses the causal effects on local labour market outcomes of the earthquakes that occurred in Italy in 2009, 2012 and 2016. The results show a strong heterogeneity: the 2009 event had significant negative and persistent impacts on the employment rate of the LLMAs involved, w…

  • The legacy of literacy

    Open Access•Roberto Basile, Carlo Ciccarelli et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Italy was unified in 1861. As part of the process of nation-building, a mandatory free-of-charge primary school system was established. Whereas the new school system greatly contributed to the modernization of the country, its initial design did not considerably reduce regional disparities in human capital, with Southern regions lagging behind. The paper studies the effects of the heterogeneous territorial diffusion of literacy during the post-un…

  • The location of the Italian manufacturing industry, 1871–1911

    Open Access•Roberto Basile, Carlo Ciccarelli•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 10

This study focuses on industrial location in Italy during the period 1871–1911, when manufacturing moved from artisanal to factory-based production processes. There is general agreement in the historical and economic literature that factor endowment and domestic market potential represented the main drivers of industrial location. We test the relative importance of the above drivers of location for the various manufacturing sectors using data at …

  • Do agglomeration externalities affect firm survival

Roberto Basile, Rosanna Pittiglio et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 5

Do agglomeration externalities affect firm survival? Regional Studies . This paper analyses the impact of spatial agglomeration externalities on Italian start-up firms’ survival. Italy represents a relevant case study given the well-known role of firm clusters in the country's economic development. Results obtained support the hypothesis that industry variety reduces the likelihood of firm exit. Specifically, related variety, which contributes to…

  • Specialization and risk sharing in European regions

Roberto Basile, Alessandro Girardi•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Economic theory emphasizes that risk sharing makes it possible to exploit benefits from comparative advantages and economies of scale. An estimated regional-specific index of risk sharing is used as a covariate in a model of industrial specialization. Allowing for nonlinearities and spatial dependence, we show that industrial specialization is positively affected by risk-sharing measures even controlling for other relevant regressors

  • Countertransference and the characters of the psychoanalytic session

    Antonino Ferro, Roberto Basile•ARTICLE•The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic…•2008•References: 6

The authors address the transference-countertransference axis as a central dimension of psychoanalytic work and apply the concept of the “analytic field” to describe this area. Initially understood as a locus wherein crossed resistances of the patient-analyst encounter are reduced by the analyst's capacity for “second-thought” interpretations, the field today connotes a meeting point of the multiple potentialities of analyst and patient and of th…

  • Unity of Analysis

    Open Access•Antonino Ferro, Roberto Basile•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 7•References: 20

When comparing child analysis with that of grown-ups, we are confronted with a substantial unity of psychoanalytic method, beyond the apparent differences. The more we consider the analysis as a here-and-now interaction between analyst and patient with transformative potential, the more age-dependent differences become blurred, and the specificity of a particular analytic couple acquires more significance. At the same time, what seems to be all t…

  • The Psychoanalyst as Individual

    Open Access•Antonino Ferro, Roberto Basile•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•2004•Cited by: 9•References: 10

The authors discuss the position of the analyst as an individual and the idea that his mental functioning can be seen as a meaningful element of the analytic field. The first part of the article shows the importance of the analyst's self-analysis, with particular attention to periods when the analyst is facing a difficult time, self-analysis in supervision, and the exploration of transgenerational influences. The authors go on to discuss the many…
