This article examines how the war in Ukraine and the subsequent re-orientation of Swedish security and defense policy leading up to a NATO-application, has been discussed in Swedish public debate. We ask what work gender does in the sense-making of the war and the changes in security policy. Departing from feminist theories of security and gendered protection, the study discusses the ambivalent ways in which gender and the trope of Sweden as a ge…
The politics of gender in the UN Security Council resolutions on women, peace and security
Women’s groups have worked diligently to place gender and women’s vulnerability on the transnational security agenda. This article departs from the idea that negotiating and codifying gender and women’s vulnerability in terms of security represent a challenge to mainstream security contexts. By contrasting the UN Security Council resolutions on women, peace and security with feminist theory, this article aims to analyze what is considered to be t…

This article takes up the basic question whether - and how - women can be named in a liberating way. The discussion has its starting point in two concrete issues debated in the course of the 1998 election campaign in Sweden. The first is the problem of gender and competence and the second is the question of strategic and organisational nioves. Both examples demonstrate that men and women are named differently in politics, the main point being tha…
Women's agency and collective action
Unprotected by the Swedish welfare state
The Swedish gender model: Productivity, pragmatism and paternalism
