  • Zlatan Ibrahimović

    Open Access•Roine Johansson, Per-Markku Ristilammi et al.•ARTICLE•Soccer and Society•2023•References: 6

In October 2019, Zlatan Ibrahimović, the most successful and famous Swedish football player ever, was honoured with a monument by the Swedish Football Association and the city of Malmö. Born in Malmö in 1981, Ibrahimović grew up in a migrant area of the city (Rosengård). Growing up, he played football in local teams, and at the age of 19 he was sold by Malmö FF to Ajax for the highest transfer fee ever in Sweden. However, when Ibrahimović unexpec…

  • Hälsosam femininitet och postfeministiska subjekt

    Open Access•Helena Tolvhed•ARTICLE•Tidskrift för genusvetenskap•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 3

During the last decades of the 1900s, a commercial health industry transformed a previous Swedish public health regime characterised by strong state control. Running and exercising at gyms are now widely practiced, and new products, diets and trends constantly appear. Part of this is a booming market of health- and fitness magazines, and this article examines the representation of healthy femininity in one of the more popular titles on the Swedis…

  • Sex Dilemmas, Amazons and Cyborgs

    Open Access•Helena Tolvhed•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2013•References: 23

In this article, I discuss sport and physical activities as a field of empirical investigation for feminist cultural studies with a potential to contribute to theorizing the body, gender and difference. Sport has, historically, served to legitimize and rein-force the gender dichotomy by making men 'masculine' through developing physical strength and endurance, while women generally have been excluded or di-rected towards activities fostering a 'f…

  • The Sports Woman as a Cultural Challenge

    Helena Tolvhed•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 9

In this article, popular press coverage of summer and winter Olympic Games in Swedish popular and illustrated magazines during the 1950s and 1960s is analysed as part of a process of everyday affirmation of national and gender identity. First, it is shown how Swedish male athletes are represented in the media as active and forceful male bodies, competing for national honour. The article then moves on to an analysis of representation of female Oly…

  • Brassebönor, stålmän och svarta spöken. Idrottande kroppar i Ses bevakning av sommar-OS 1948-1980

    Open Access•Helena Tolvhed•ARTICLE•Tidskrift för genusvetenskap•2005•Cited by: 2

This artide deals with representations of sporting bodies in the weekly magazine Se's reports from nine Olympic Games, 1948-1980. Media representation (text and images) contributes to the process of shaping the reader's views on the world, and representations of sport communicate ideas on "natural differences" (based on, for example, gender, race or nationality) between bodies. I arglie that while male athletes are represented as sporfsmen, with …
