Willingness to change and transition pain - exploring forestry students’ views on future forestry
This study explores the thoughts of forestry students at upper secondary school about future working life, as well as their hopes and concerns related to the phase-out of intensive forest management practices. How students relate to forest is seen as central to understanding the emotions that shape their view of the future. The concept of transition pain is used to analyse feelings such as resistance and perceived unfairness. The study is based o…
‘Challenging from the start’
There is a widespread interest in doctoral supervision, yet novice doctoral co-supervisors’ experiences remain understudied. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore how supervision culture and practice are experienced by novices. This thematic analysis is based on focus groups and in-depth interviews with 23 novice co-supervisors from two Swedish research-intensive universities. The study reveals three dimensions related to the challengin…
“Screwed from the start”
After finishing the PhD, the researcher enters a stage in their early research career where more independence is expected. Within a relatively short time period, the researcher needs to gather research experience and support in the form of tangible resources as funding, and intangible resources like access to research networks, close collaborations, and mentorship to support their next career stage. How resources are allocated are therefore impor…
Vem ska leda jämställdhetsarbetet inom akademin? En studie av jägmästarprogrammet vid SLU
The forestry sector has been associated with a strong negative masculine culture. With the sector’s own #metoo call in 2017–2018, it became apparent that sexism and discrimination are still prevalent, and that more needs to be done to change the situation for those studying and working in the sector. Calls for stronger leadership is frequently heard, arguing that without the leadership on board, little can be done to change negative norms and pra…
Critical, Engaged and Change-oriented Scholarship in Environmental Communication. Six Methodological Dilemmas to Think With
While calls for critical, engaged and change-oriented scholarship in environmental communication (EC) abound, few articles discuss what this may practically entail. With this article, we aim to contribute to a discussion in EC about the methodological implications of such scholarship. Based on our combined experience in EC research and drawing from a variety of academic fields, we describe six methodological dilemmas that we encounter in our rese…
Gendered youth strategies for inclusion in a changing society
This paper explores how place and gender relations influence young people's ways of formulating their struggles and negotiations related to education, work, family, everyday life and achievement of certain life goals. In addition, the paper examines key municipal officials’ viewpoints, opening up a space for exchange and development at the interface of policy actions and young people's embodied lives. It is shown that young men and women alike ar…
Balancing family traditions and business
Gender contracts in Estonian coastal farming families, 1870–1939
This paper deals with families that lived on the North West coast of Estonia from 1870 to 1939. This period involved a successive transition to a monetary economy for the family farmer and an increasing need for cash to be able to pay rents and debts arising from land purchases. A farm perspective is used to show the complexity of effects of societal changes on the gender division of labour. The study highlights how practices evolve within a spec…
Estonian family farms in transition
Estonian Swedish Ethnic Survival – Examples from Nuckö in the Interwar Period
A long-term perspective is important in studies of ethnic groups and their opportunities for survival. This case study deals with the Swedish population in Nuckö (Noarootsi), Estonia, during the interwar period. Even though the Swedish population declined as a whole, some villages succeeded in maintaining their Swedish affiliation. Settlement patterns and varying opportunities to own land are important factors behind these differences. The Estoni…
