Open Access•Matilda Svensson Chowdhury, Pål Brunnström et al.•ARTICLE•Tidskrift för genusvetenskap•2025•References: 20

The anthology Queera historier från Malmö (Queer histories from Malmö) was created between June 2020 and August 2021. The initiative came from two associate professors at a Swedish university. However, most of the chapters in the anthology were written by people outside the academy. This article is co-written by two of the writers and the two initiators and editors of the anthology. It is an attempt of emancipatory writing where different thought…

  • Refugees, expellees and immigrants

    Open Access•Brian Shaev, Sarah Hackett et al.•ARTICLE•Urban History•2022•References: 4

The vital role that cities play in the governance of migration is increasingly recognized, yet migration scholars still perceive this ‘local turn’ as a recent phenomenon. This article presents a cross-country and cross-city comparative analysis of three mid-size European cities during the post-war period: Bristol, Dortmund and Malmö. It analyses administrative cultures and local policy arenas, exposing the complexity of local migration policy-mak…

  • Problematic Yet Needed

Open Access•Pål Brunnström, Robert Nilsson Mohammadi•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration History•2021

Inspired by Carol Bacchi’s ‘what’s the problem represented to be’ ( wpr ) approach, the article analyses the shifting problematisations of migrant reception in Malmö, and argues that there were two decisive shifts in Malmö’s migrant reception policy. With the help…

  • Migration and housing regimes in Sweden 1739–1982

Open Access•Pål Brunnström, Peter Håkansson et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This article aims to analyse the changes in migration regimes in Sweden over the period 1739–1982. We have chosen to divide this into four periods where each is characterized as a specific regime: the pre-industrial period (1739–1860), the laissez faire period (1860–1932), the rising ambitions period (1932–1951) and the Rehn-Meidner period (1951–1982). These four periods reveal different approaches held by the state regarding labour migration and…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Ragnhild Claesson, Pål Brunnström•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2019•References: 6

While nation states have a disputed status in a globalised world, cities are often regarded as sovereign and global actors. Along with de-nationalising processes of increased privatisation, supranational governing and networks of transnational corporations, city administrations have developed new capabilities of orientation and governing in a global context (Sassen 2006). Inequality, poverty and segregation are some of the pressing issues that ci…
