Resource Extraction and Arctic Communities
For decades, a post-Cold War narrative heralded a 'new Arctic', with melting ice and snow and accessible resources that would build sustainable communities. Today, large parts of the Arctic are still trapped in the path dependencies of past resource extraction. At the same time, the impetus for green transitions and a 'new industrialism' spell opportunities to shift the development model and build new futures for Arctic residents and Indigenous p…

Imperial Ghosts in the North Atlantic
Denmark and the New North Atlantic
Emotions, finances and independence. Uranium as a “happy object” in the Greenlandic debate on secession from Denmark
Analysing the Danish-Greenlandic debate on Greenland’s plans to extract and export uranium, the article advocates bringing the fields of extraction studies and cultural studies into dialogue. Drawing on discourse analysis, critical theory and the “emotional turn” in social sciences, the article demonstrates how the current discussion about secession is linked to a Danish-Greenlandic affective economy instituted during the colonial era. Conceived …
"En gift i blodet"
Inspired by Sara Ahmed, the article analyzes how long-established affective economies still dominate post-colonial relations between Danes and Greenlanders. Affective relationships between Greenlanders and Danes are embedded in historically inherited, asymmetric political, and financial power relations. While the political and economic conditions often are subject to analysis because data in these fields is relatively easy to access, it is much h…

Island — Eine Literaturgeschichte
The Speaking Bodies of Saga Texts
This volume presents twenty essays by leading scholars of Old Norse which bring into focus the nature of learned traditions — both oral and written — in medieval Scandinavia and the interpretation and re-interpretation of them over time. Theoretical frameworks for understanding Old Norse literature is the initial topic of the collection, which then moves on to present recent work on Old Norse myth and society; current perspectives on oral traditi…
Lost - And Gained - In Translation
In the article we approach the topic of cultural encounter through the concept of cultural translation and argue - in line with postcolonial theorists like Homi Bhabha - that this concept is far more open to minority positions than the Danish concept of 'kulturmøde' (literally: the meeting of cultures), and that it brings into focus creativity, negotiation and transformation, rather than the usual debate about integration or assimilation. All soc…

Særlig dansk” - Dansk litteraturs kanon i et minoritetsperspektiv
The Danish Literary Canon (Dansk litteraturs kanon) implicitly addresses pupils of non-Danish origin. The purpose of the canon is to suggest pedagogical tools in the teachings of specific texts that are viewed as central to the Danish and European literary tradition. The consequences of this project are not only that pupils of non-Danish origin become situated as ‘others’ in relation to the idea of ‘danishness’, but that this implicit constitutio…

Over Deres Egen Races Lig
In an article from 1920 Knud Rasmussen wrote: 'One has no choice. The life of all people of nature ('naturfolk' - the term Rasmussen prefered to 'primitive people') in the future is depending solely on their potentials for development under new conditions; the road to the future must lead over the dead body of their own race.' These words have later been quoted again and again, often detached from their context and therefore misunderstood. It is …
Old Icelandic Literature and Society
From the period of settlement (870–930) to the end of the fourteenth century, Icelanders produced one of the most varied and original literatures of medieval Europe. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of Old Icelandic literature within its social setting and across a range of genres. An international team of specialists examines the ways in which the unique social experiment in Iceland, a kingless society without an establi…
