  • Knowing Otherwise”

Open Access•Laura Connoy, Kathleen Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2026

The COVID-19 pandemic was a time of significant crisis for most Canadians. For those living with chronic pain, it was a disproportionately challenging time. There have been calls for researchers to address the experiences of chronic pain during the time of pandemic, including for those who also struggle with systemic and structural marginalization. The purpose of this study was to highlight the experiences of people living with chronic pain and p…

  • Spaced learning and melodic memory

Open Access•Joel Katz, Joel J Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2025

Distributed learning is a powerful tool for optimizing retention of verbal materials. We examined the effect of distributing learning on long-term memory for a melody and found strong evidence of better recall in the spaced conditions. In the current study, music students were taught a four-phrase melody in learning sessions that were massed, spaced at 2 days, or spaced at 1 week. Three weeks later, they were tested for recall. Performances were …

  • Internalizing personality traits and coping motivations for gaming during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Rebecca Lewinson, Jeffrey D Wardell et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Journal of…•2024

Anxiety sensitivity and hopelessness are two traits that have been previously linked to increased gaming problems. Research in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic showed that emotionally vulnerable individuals were turning to video games as a means of coping with their distress. However, more research is needed on the long-term and enduring pathways from internalizing traits to time spent gaming during COVID-19, after the lockdowns and prev…

  • Gaming as a coping strategy during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Rebecca Lewinson, Jeffrey D Wardell et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Journal of…•2023

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, social interactions were constrained by physical distancing guidelines. Consequently, some individuals may have turned to video games to cope with isolation and negative emotions. Previous studies have shown that people who struggle with anxiety and depression are at particular risk for developing problem gaming behaviours. However, there is a paucity of longitudinal research testing pathways from negative emotiona…

  • Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization and Its Relationship to the Anxiety–Pain Connection in Youth with Chronic Pain

Open Access•Larah Maunder, Maria Pavlova et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

The bidirectional relationship between anxiety and chronic pain in youth is well-known, but how anxiety contributes to the maintenance of pediatric chronic pain needs to be elucidated. Sensitivity to pain traumatization (SPT), an individual's propensity to develop responses to pain that resemble a traumatic stress response, may contribute to the mutual maintenance of anxiety and pediatric chronic pain. A clinical sample of youth (aged 10-18 years…

  • Differential Risk Factor Profiles in the Prediction of General and Pain-Specific Functional Limitations 12 Months after Major Pediatric Surgery

    Open Access•Brittany N Rosenbloom, P Maxwell Slepian et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Pediatric chronic post-surgical pain is a surgical complication associated with various levels of functional limitation. Two commonly used measures of functional limitations in youth are the Functional Disability Inventory (FDI) and the PROMIS Pediatric Pain Interference Scale (PPIS), where the former is general, and the latter, pain specific. The aim of the present study was to prospectively compare pre-surgical youth and parent risk factors for…

  • The Parent Version of the Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization Scale (SPTS-P)

Open Access•Jaimie K Beveridge, Maria Pavlova et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Sensitivity to pain traumatization (SPT) is defined as the propensity to develop responses to pain that resemble a traumatic stress reaction. To date, SPT has been assessed in adults with a self-report measure (Sensitivity to Pain Traumatization Scale (SPTS-12)). SPT may also be relevant in the context of parenting a child with chronic pain, as many of these parents report clinically elevated posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). This study aimed…

  • Trajectory Modelling Techniques Useful to Epidemiological Research

Open Access•Hermine Lore Nguena Nguefack, M Gabrielle Pagé et al.•ARTICLE•Clinical Epidemiology•2020

  • Conducting gender-based analysis of existing databases when self-reported gender data are unavailable

Open Access•Anaïs Lacasse, M Gabrielle Pagé et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 36

The GENDER Index could be useful to enhance the capacity of researchers using CCHS data to conduct gender-based analysis among populations of workers

  • Ronald Melzack (1929–2019)

    Joel Katz•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2020

Presents an obituary of Ronald Melzack (1929-2019). Melzack died on Sunday, December 22, 2019, at 10:00 p.m. News of his death spread like wildfire through the network of long-time friends and colleagues who had heard of his imminent passing. At that moment, the world lost a compassionate and caring soul, an advocate for chronic pain sufferers around the globe, and a giant in the international pain community. He is survived by his wife of 59 year…

  • The mismeasurement of complexity

Open Access•Frank Webster, Kathleen Rice et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2019

Defining patient complexity as morbidity alone is inadequate; such models neglect syndromes and conditions that are not included in formal disease classifications. Chronic pain should be included among the chronic conditions that are considered to constitute multimorbidity. In order to provide effective patient-centered care, discussions of patient complexity must also attend to the complex social and economic circumstances in which many patients…

  • A Randomized Controlled Trial of Cognitive Behavior Therapy Tailored to Psychological Adaptation to an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator

Jane Irvine, Jill Firestone et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2011

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a eight-session cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) intervention tailored to adaptation in implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) patients; and to test for treatment group by gender interaction effects. METHODS: Patients receiving their first ICD implant were randomized to CBT or usual cardiac care. Primary outcomes measured at baseline, 6-month, and 12-month follow-ups were symptoms of anxiety and depression (Hospital …

  • Duften Af Danskhed

    Joel Katz•ARTICLE•Tidsskriftet Antropologi•2000

The scent of Danishness is attempted at being discerned. In doing so, the term 'culture scent set' as an analytical concept is coined. It is defined as the specific conglomerate of aromatic elements in a culture: racial scents (contingent upon body hair, fatty skin tissues, type of hair, and diet), clothing textiles, building materials, aromas used in the home and the surrounding natural environment. Recent changes in the Danish language regardin…
