  • Race Matters in Intersectional Feminisms. Towards a Danish Grammar Book

    Kirsten Hvenegård-Lassen, Dorthe Staunæs•ARTICLE•NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 10

In this article, we ask: “how does race matter when working with intersectional feminism in a postcolonial Nordic context?” We take our cue from feminist and postcolonial scholars who have pointed out that minoritisation and majoritisation processes in the Nordic area are entangled in ongoing racialization processes. Working with and around the video installation Black Magic at the White House by the artist Jeanette Ehlers, we hold on to the part…

  • Elefanten i (bede)rummet. Raciale forsvindingsnumre, stemningspolitik og idiomatisk diffraktion

    Open Access•Kirsten Hvenegård-Lassen, Dorthe Staunæs•ARTICLE•Kvinder Køn & Forskning•2019

The elephant in the room. Racial disappearance acts, mood politics and idiomatic diffraction summarizes a particular way of handling social and cultural problems. It is about social taboosthat are affectively charged: even if everybody knows the elephant is there, they ignore it. In this article, we are grappling with disappearance acts related to race and racialization at a white-dominated Danish university. Race is simultaneously there and not …

  • Journey to the centre of the ice

    Kirsten Hvenegård-Lassen•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2016

On the remote icecap in northwest Greenland, an international team of glaciologists led by scientists from Copenhagen University recently drilled a 2537.36 m long ice core, finally reaching bedrock in July 2010. The ice core charts a climate history that reaches back more than 115,000 years to the Eemian period. This time travel ultimately aims at predicting the climate of the future. While the heroic polar expeditions of the past ventured into u…

Feminism in Postcolonial Nordic SpacesI think the dismissiveness of white liberal feminism takes shape in the form of nonrecognition, indifference, or plain ignorance.Nordic feminists don't openly resist Smi perspectives on feminism but they don't engage with them either.(Rauna Kuokkanen)The quotation above is Rauna Kuokkanen's concise answer to Ina Knobblock in the interview "Decolonizing Feminism: A Conversation with Rauna Kuokkanen" included i…

An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses reports within the issue on topics including the development of state feminism in Nordic countries, the feminist resistance and communality of feminist activists, and the problems in the implementation of gender mainstreaming

  • Disturbing Femininity

    Open Access•Kirsten Hvenegård-Lassen•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2013•References: 13

When Helle Thorning-Schmidt in 2011 became the first female Prime Minister in Denmark, this 'victory for the women' was praised in highly celebratory tones in Danish newspapers. The celebration involved a paradoxical representation of gender as simultaneously irrelevant to politics and - when it comes to femininity - in need of management. Based on an analysis of the newspaper coverage of the election, I argue that highlighting gender (in)equalit…

  • At Drikke Æblete

    Kirsten Hvenegård-Lassen•ARTICLE•Tidsskriftet Antropologi•2007

The title of this article, 'Drinking Apple Tea', refers to the account of a social worker visiting the family of his drug-addicted client. While the visit proceeds in silence, the social worker finds his own frustration rising: 'We just sit there and drink apple tea. What am I doing here?' This story points to the fact that cultural differences are difficult to manage within the institutions of the Danish welfare state, since they tend to fall ou…
