Гипотеза о «монгольской» этничности народа жуань-жуань и ее критика в китайской историографии 1980-х гг. (по монографии Пань Го-цзяня)
Introduction. The ethnic history studies on ‘frontier peoples’ who had inhabited territories north of China is a traditionally actual topic for the world and Chinese historiographies. However, attention to certain ethnic groups was and remains uneven. While numerous studies are devoted to many famous ancient and medieval peoples and ethnic groups, studies on the history of the Ruan-Ruan ethnic entity are conducted in quite a poor and inadequate w…
“Russia has Come More Than Twice as Nearer to Us”
Was the 1896 “Moscow Treaty” (“Sino-Russian Secret Treaty”) an unequal one? The Russian assessments of this Treaty, signed by A.B. Lobanov-Rostovsky, S.Y. Witte and Li Hongzhang on May 22.05/03.06.1896, during Li's visit to celebrate the coronation of Nicholas II in Moscow, is a special topic, already generally explored in our publications. The monograph prepared by a group of well-known St. Petersburg orientalists testifies to the significant development of comparative Imagology in Russian Oriental studies, caused by th…
He Was a Friend of Our Fatherland
The Qing Empire dignitary Li Hong-zhang was one of the main protagonists of the events and the official signatory of both treaties on behalf of China. While Li’s mission in 1895 in Shimonoseki was “to seal with his signature the peace, shameful for his Fatherland”, his visit to Russia in 1896 became an honorable mission. Li managed it brilliantly, signing an allied Defense Treaty with Russia, including agreement on construction of the Chinese Eas…
Who stole the ram? The “New Interpretations” of the “Analects” (13.8) and the most recent discussions on the “effective admonition” by the scholars from the Peoples’ Republic of China
The article offers a historiographic survey followed by an assessment of a big-scale discussion, which deals with the “new interpretations” of the famous fragment − “Stealing a ram” from the “Analects” (Lun Yu, 論語) a large collection of sayings and ideas attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and his contemporaries (Analects, 13.18). The origin of the Analects dates back over two millennia. Regardless of “advanced age” it does still attr…
