A Chapter on Ayutthaya (Xianluo) in Hai Yu and the Chinese Misinterpretations in the Depiction of Southern Thailand in Early–Mid Ming Sources
First mentions of the Southern Thai polities start to appear in the Chinese sources of the Southern Song dynasty. However, contacts between them do not seem to have been continuous and were probably mainly non-official (i.e., trading). Epigraphy as the Key Source on Zheng He Expeditions and Its Modern Interpretation
Zheng He expeditions (1405–1433) can be rightfully considered one of the most significant events in the history of China and international relations. The main difficulty in studying these expeditions is considered to be a small quantity of primary sources – most of such documents were intentionally destroyed in 1470s. The written evidence which survived has …

Cambodia’s Decline and the Fall of Angkor as Pictured in the Chinese Sources during the Yuan and Early-Middle Ming dynasties (Late XIII - Early XV cc.)
The fall of Angkor in the 15th century marked a turning point in the Cambodian history leading to the downfall of the Khmer civilization and the start of the so-called “post-Angkor period” which is also often referred to as the “Dark Age of Cambodia”. Local epigraphical sources almost completely disappear from the 13th up to the 16th centuries while the Royal Chronicles dealing with this timeframe were compiled much later, mostly in the 18th and …
