  • Differentiating Careers from Jobs in the Search for Dual-Career Couples

    Open Access•Joy E Pixley•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 36

Members of social categories with multifaceted definitions are often sampled using only one or two characteristics, generating theoretical and methodological problems. Here, the author examines the case of 'dual-career' couples. The author tests how closely respondents' and scholars' distinctions between careers versus jobs correspond and how well selected definition models capture career-oriented couples. Members of fifty-one married couples sel…

  • Life Course Patterns of Career-Prioritizing Decisions and Occupational Attainment in Dual-Earner Couples

    Open Access•Joy E Pixley•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2008•Cited by: 17•References: 44

Couples' long-term pattern of favoring one spouse's career in major decisions is thought to affect occupational trajectories, but current research has looked only at short-term effects of single decisions. This article applies a new technique, the interpolated curves approach, to represent and compare life course patterns of major career-prioritizing decisions, using in-depth data from 51 couples. Five clusters of career hierarchy patterns are id…

  • A Structural Approach to the Representation of Life History Data 1

    C T Butts, Joy E Pixley•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 30

We propose a structural approach to the representation of life history data, based on an interval graph formalism. Various “life history graphs” are defined using this approach, and properties of such graphs are related to life course concepts. The analysis of life history graphs using standard network methods is illustrated, and suggestions are made regarding the use of network analysis for life course research. A duality is demonstrated between…
