Research as discovery or delivery? Exploring the implications of cultural repertoires and career demands for junior economists’ research practices
Recently, social scientists have begun to study the implications of increasing pressures in the early academic career. Studies focusing mostly on the life sciences have shown junior scholars making research decisions based on a productivity logic to increase their chances of career success. In this paper, we extend this literature to the very different context of economics, characterized by a dominant mainstream, a clear hierarchy, and an indepen…
Habits of the Millennial Heart
This article presents an exploratory mapping of millennial individualism. In doing so, it complicates the common popular and scholarly narrative that millennials as a generation are less committed to the broader social order. Instead, drawing from recent advances in the study of American culture, I show that millennial individualism can be compatible with extra-individual commitment. Analyses draw from in-depth interviews with a sample of underem…
Gendered Patterns of Unmet Resource Need among Academic Researchers
An expansive body of literature has documented how academia acts as a gendered organization, characterized by disadvantage at multiple levels. Because of data limitations, we know surprisingly little about whether and how access to the resources needed to carry out high-quality research may be gendered. This study begins to fill this gap using a newly available survey of researchers in three disciplines across five European countries. Across a wi…
Willful Versus Woeful Underemployment
This article challenges a key assumption of underemployment scholarship: that the modal underemployed worker is involuntarily underemployed. Drawing from in-depth interviews, the author analyzes one particular type of underemployment: overqualification among college graduates. Findings demonstrate (a) that workers differ markedly in their perceptions of overqualification, (b) that these perceptions create distinct overqualification experiences, a…
Increasing Reading Compliance of Undergraduates
A common source of frustration for college instructors is getting their students to read. Since the 1970s, studies have shown that no more than 30 percent of students complete a reading assignment on any given day. But what can be done? What strategies can instructors use to make certain that their students read? Do pop or announced quizzes work better? Does it help to call on students randomly in class? To date, little systematic evidence exists…
