Spatial Inequalities Among Urban Probation Populations
This study presents findings of the first empirical analysis of the spatial distribution of probation populations and ecological implications. The study analyzes closed cases in the Adult Probation Department of Cook County, Illinois, between 2011 and 2016. Analyses examine the spatial distribution of individuals on probation across Chicago neighborhoods and the association between neighborhood probationer concentration rates and violent crime ra…
Culturally responsive recruitment of Black daughter-mother dyads through community engagement
Introduction: Black Girls Move is a 12-week, race-conscious, multicomponent, mHealth obesity prevention intervention for Black 7th-10th grade daughters and their mothers. The complex experiences of Black female adolescents and adults necessitate tailored recruitment and retention strategies to address structural, programmatic, and interpersonal barriers to participation. We outline culturally responsive recruitment and retention strategies, lesso…
Depression and the Neighborhood Experience of Black and Latine Adults
Black and Latine adults living in high-burden urban neighborhoods are at risk for experiencing poor mental health and physical health outcomes. The current study examined the associations between neighborhood concentrated disadvantage and perceptions of neighborhood social cohesion to depressive symptoms, via perceived fear of neighborhood crime. Participants included 585 adults (87% female; 54% Black and 46% Latine) who were parents or caregiver…
Grandmothers residing with grandchildren
The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between social determinants of health, health behaviors, and physical and mental health among African American and Hispanic caregiving grandmothers. We use cross-sectional secondary data from the Chicago Community Adult Health Study, originally designed to understand the health of individual households based on residential context. In a multivariate regression model, discrimination, parent…
The Implications of Executive Functioning on Community Adversity and Violence and Mental Health Outcomes
Exposure to community adversities and violence can be associated with a cascade of neurocognitive, mental health, and behavioral challenges among urban adolescents. Influenced by the bio-ecological framework, this study examines if problems with executive functioning (EF) exacerbate the relation between exposure to community adversity and violence and internalizing symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms) and externalizing behav…
Recruitment, Retention, and Intervention Outcomes from the Dedicated African American Dad (Daad) Study
Predictors of Maternal Participation in Fatherhood Intervention Research With African American Nonresident Fathers
Purpose: The goal of this study was to understand factors that predict mothers’ decisions to participate as data informants in a randomized controlled trial of a fatherhood intervention for African-American non-resident fathers. Method: Baseline data from 178 fathers and 125 mothers in the Dedicated African American Dad (DAAD) study were examined. Prior research and theoretical frameworks by Feinberg and Morawska informed father variable selectio…
Interactive Effects of Physical Activity and Cognitive Activity on Cognition in Older Adults Without Mild Cognitive Impairment or Dementia
Objective: The purpose of this secondary analysis was to test effects of interactions between accelerometer-measured physical activity and self-reported cognitive activity on cognition in older adults without cognitive impairment. Method: Participants were 742 older adults from the Rush Memory and Aging Project who completed annual clinical evaluations. A series of parallel growth models tested effects of interactions between physical activity an…
Increasing Schedule Predictability in Hourly Jobs
For hourly workers, schedule predictability often depends on how far in advance schedules are posted. This article presents results from a process evaluation of an intervention to increase advance schedule notice in hourly retail jobs. The authors open up the black box of implementation to understand managers’ experiences posting schedules further in advance and employees’ ability to anticipate working time. Although schedules were posted further…
Fathers’ Criminal Behavior and Involvement With Children
Strong and affirmative relationships-with male relatives specifically-may attenuate the adverse effects of antisocial and criminal behavior on fathers' involvement in at-risk families. Implications for tailoring practice to improve relationships between fathers and male relatives and to enhance fathers' prosocial involvement are noted
Accelerometer Physical Activity is Associated with Greater Gray Matter Volumes in Older Adults Without Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment
These findings may inform future lifestyle PA interventions in order to attenuate age-related gray matter atrophy
Patterns of Social-Emotional Needs and Trajectories of Aggression and Substance Use Among Middle School Boys
Co-occurring social-emotional problems are associated with increased risk of aggression and substance use. However, few studies examine their configurational patterns. This study identifies patterns of co-occurring social skills, anxiety, learning, and conduct problems among 2,632 urban boys at entry into sixth grade, and their related aggression and substance use trajectories through eighth grade. Latent class analysis revealed four patterns at …
Neighborhood Concentrated Disadvantage and Dating Violence among Urban Adolescents
The link between relationship violence and aspects of neighborhood concentrated disadvantage (e.g., percent of unemployed adults, percent of families below poverty level), has been established. However, the literature examining neighborhood social processes, including informal social control and social cohesion, in relation to adolescent dating violence has shown mixed results with a limited theoretical foundation and methodology. Using a social …
Disagreement in Parental Reports of Father Involvement
Despite agreement on the value of father involvement in children's lives, research has been limited due to the exclusion of fathers in studies, questionable validity of mothers' reports on father involvement, and simple measures of fathering behavior. Our study extends previous research by comparing reports of father involvement using robust, multidimensional father involvement measures. Data from 113 fathers and 126 mothers reporting on 221 chil…
African-American Women's Long-term Maintenance of Physical Activity Following a Randomized Controlled Trial
Our findings suggest that long-term maintenance of PA increases resulting from group meetings in an active intervention occur when followed by a maintenance intervention
Permanent Housing for Child Welfare‐Involved Families
Highlights Inadequate housing and homelessness contribute to risk for child placement into out‐of‐home care. Permanent housing through the child welfare system aims to decrease risk for child maltreatment. A RCT through child welfare referred homeless families for permanent housing or housing services. Marginal treatment differences existed on change in caregiver‐reported maltreatment over 2.5 years. Child welfare services remain important in ens…
Outcomes, Data, and Indicators of Violence at the Community Level
Youth violence is a major problem in the United States. It remains the third leading cause of death among youth between the ages of 10 and 24 years and the leading cause of death in Blacks between 10 and 24 years of age. In its effort to prevent youth violence, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention funds six Youth Violence Prevention Centers (YVPCs) to design, implement and evaluate community-based youth violence prevention programs. Thes…

Neighborhood Matters”
Neighborhoods are important contexts for understanding development and behavior, but cost and difficulty have challenged attempts to develop measures of neighborhood social processes at the neighborhood level. This article reports the development, reliability, and validity of Neighborhood Matters, a collection of instruments assessing three aspects of neighborhood social processes, namely, norms (five subscales), informal social control (six subs…
Inadequate Housing Among Families Under Investigation for Child Abuse and Neglect
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of inadequate housing that threaten out‐of‐home placement among families under investigation by child welfare. Data came from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well‐Being, a nationally representative longitudinal survey of child welfare‐involved families. Child protective services caseworkers as well as caregivers provided information on families whose child remained in the home after initial …
Sexually Transmitted Infections and Unintended Pregnancy
Data from 1087 adolescent participants in three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health was used to examine the effects of peer selection and socialization processes in adolescence on later reports of sexually-transmitted infections (STI) and unintended pregnancies. Friends' attitudes and behavior were assessed with friends' reports. Among males, there was evidence for selection effects on STI diagnoses and socialization eff…
School Climate and Implementation of a Preventive Intervention
Although there has been wide dissemination of research‐based psychosocial prevention programs, a similarly strong research base to guide program implementation has been lacking. Program implementation has been particularly difficult for schools, due partly to insufficient understanding of how school ecologies interact with these programs. This study examined the effects of multiple dimensions of school climate on level and rate of change in imple…
Youth Supplying Tobacco to Other Minors
Current smoking among young adolescents
The analytic approach used to examine contextual effects using individuals' reports of peer tobacco use norms that were aggregated to obtain a context measure of the school norms may produce statistical artefacts that distort the association of the school context in general, and peer tobacco use norms in particular, with increased risk for current smoking beyond the risk associated with individual factors

Eliminating Invalid Self-Report Survey Data
A sample of 6,370 students in Grades 6 to 8 completed a questionnaire on their attitudes and use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. A subsample showed questionable data based on three criteria: missing responses, invalid responses, and inconsistent responses. Analysis indicated that this subsample was significantly different from the main group on demographic variables and self-reported life-time tobacco use. Results support efforts to identif…
Evaluating the effects of enforcements and fines on youth smoking
Restricting access to retail sources of tobacco and fining minors for possession of tobacco products were evaluated as possible strategies to reduce the rising rates of teenage smoking. Four towns were assigned to enforce both tobacco minimum-age-of sales laws and tobacco possession laws (P). The remaining four towns were assigned to enforce only tobacco minimum-age-of sales laws (NP). Tobacco use among sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students …
