The Liberation of the Senses: Marcuse and the Subjectivation of Art
This article analyzes the aesthetic thought of Herbert Marcuse by focusing on his understanding of the prefigurative dimension of art. According to Marcuse, the experience of art can, in some instances, prefigure a new sensibility and a new form of subjectivity. By relating Marcuse’s thought to our present neoliberal conjunction, the article discusses how Marcuse’s understanding of the possible subjectivation inherent in the experience of art can…
Navigating towards strengthened climate service processes
Despite the importance of salient, credible, and legitimate climate information for climate action, studies demonstrate a persistent usability gap between the information provided and what users find relevant and useful. Drawing from scientific literature and our experiences working with a Swedish national climate service, we explore and reflect on challenges and barriers with climate services using an analytical framework of four pillars. Based …

Climate change impacts assessment on railway infrastructure in urban environments
Climate change impacts can escalate the deteriorating rate of infrastructures and impact the infrastructure's functionality, safety, operation and maintenance (O&M). This research explores climate change's influence on urban railway infrastructure. Given the geographical diversity of Sweden, the railway network is divided into different climate zones utilizing the K-means algorithm. Reliability analysis using the Cox Proportional Hazard Model is …
From Base Materialism to Base Culture: Georges Bataille and the Politics of Heterogeneity
During two highly productive years, Georges Bataille was the main editor for the journal Documents.Together with his close friend -the writer and would-be ethnographer -Michel Leiris, the German art
Wasting Oneself Away: Nietzsche and Schürmann on the Expropriation of the Subject
In this article, I examine Reiner Schürmann’s interpretation of Nietzsche’s critique of subjectivity. By focusing on Nietzsche’s reflections on the difference between weight and lightness, I analyze Nietzsche’s critique of the appropriative nature of man and relate it to his understanding of the expropriative tendency in human existence. In the second part of the article, this Nietzschean understanding of subjectivity is developed through Schürma…
Populism and the People in Contemporary Critical Thought: Politics, Philosophy, and Aesthetics
Is populism the unsurpassable horizon of our own time or is it a temptation that should at all costs be resisted? Who, and to what end, does the jargon of populism serve
Afforestation reduces cyclone intensity and precipitation extremes over Europe
Extratropical cyclones are the dominant weather pattern in the midlatitudes and cause up to 80% of precipitation extremes in some regions of Europe with a large societal and economical impact. Using a regional climate model and a cyclone-tracking algorithm, we study how idealized deforestation and afforestation of Europe affect long-term changes in the number and intensity of cyclones, and their effects on precipitation. The number of cyclones ov…
An A-subjective Coexistence
In his article "An A-subjective Coexistence", Gustav Strandberg seeks to elucidate the relation between Jan Patočka's "a-subjective phenomenology" and his understanding of human coexistence. By taking Patočka's critique of Edmund Husserl's phenomenology as a starting point, the author shows how Patočka's displacement of phenomenology from the more traditional phenomenological analysis of the transcendental subject to an analysis of what he calls …
Does the projected pathway to global warming targets matter
Since the 'Paris agreement' in 2015 there has been much focus on what a +1.5 °C or +2 °C warmer world would look like. Since the focus lies on policy relevant global warming targets, or specific warming levels (SWLs), rather than a specific point in time, projections are pooled together to form SWL ensembles based on the target temperature rather than emission scenario. This study uses an ensemble of CMIP5 global model projections to analyse how …
Historical responsibility for climate change: Science and the science–policy interface
Since 1990, the academic literature on historical responsibility ( HR ) for climate change has grown considerably. Over these years, the approaches to defining this responsibility have varied considerably. This article demonstrates how this variation can be explained by combining various defining aspects of historical contribution and responsibility. Scientific knowledge that takes for granted choices among defining aspects will likely become a b…
Holocene land-cover reconstructions for studies on land cover-climate feedbacks
The major objectives of this paper are: (1) to review the pros and cons of the scenarios of past anthropogenic land cover change (ALCC) developed during the last ten years, (2) to discuss issues related to pollen-based reconstruction of the past land-cover and introduce a new method, REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites), to infer long-term records of past land-cover from pollen data, (3) to present a new project (…
