Perspektive und Dialog. Gadamers Expeditionen jenseits des modernen Perspektivismus
Gadamer’s attitude to the modern perspectivism is remarkably complex. On the one hand, according to Gadamer, we need to acknowledge that our knowledge and action are bound to a particular point of view. On the other hand, being inspired by Plato, Gadamer invites us to rely on the capacity of dialogue to overcome our partial views. When speaking of the “fusion of horizons”, he both acknowledges and transcends perspectivism. The article reconstructs…
Freedom as hesitation
Bergson’s conception of freedom coincides in certain respects with phenomenological approaches, especially in its emphasis on the inherently temporal character of freedom. Nevertheless, it has repeatedly been subject to criticism in phenomenology. In the first part of the study, the author lists three points of the phenomenological critique of Bergson: a different conception of consciousness, a different confidence in the possibilities of metaphy…
Laws of nature, rules of society, and freedom
This special issue of Continental Philosophy Review addresses the big questions of freedom and determinism (physical and social) from Bergson’s perspective. Starting from an analysis of the qualitative multiplicity of conscious states, Bergson puts forward a continuist and dynamic view of free action. Not only did Bergson formulate arguments in favor of freedom but he also came up with a new conceptual meaning of freedom, namely, freedom as the g…

What is Consciousness a Negation of? Jan Patočka’s Contribution to the Existentialism Controversy
In the 1940s, Sartre’s philosophy sparked what Merleau-Ponty called the “battle over existentialism”. This article focuses on Jan Patočka’s contribution to this controversy. In his philosophical anthropology in the second half of the 1940s, Patočka sees human existence as defined by the capacity to maintain a distance from what is pre-given (reality of the physical world, established customs and rules of a particular society). Patočka thus exhibi…

Phenomenological approaches to personal identity
This special issue addresses the debate on personal identity from a phenomenological viewpoint, especially contemporary phenomenological research on selfhood. In the introduction, we first offer a brief survey of the various classic questions related to personal identity according to Locke’s initial proposal and sketch out key concepts and distinctions of the debate that came after Locke. We then characterize the types of approach represented by …
Existence and Negativity
In in the second half of the 1940s, Jan Patočka emphasized the essentially negative character of human existence. He thus found himself in the neighborhood of Sartre’s existentialism, Heidegger’s philosophy of being, and Hegel’s dialectic, and at the same time in opposition to schools of thought which either completely reject the substantive use of “the nothing,” such as Carnap’s positivism, or relativize it, like Bergson. It is the latter polemi…
Motivation et normativité

Narrative identity and phenomenology
Experience beyond Storytelling
The article focuses on narrative identity theory and its criticism in the work of László Tengelyi. It shows the particular way Lászó Tengelyi challenges narrative identity theory by employing the concept of "experience", which is inspired by certain phenomenological, especially French-speaking, philosophers. In the concluding part, some open questions in Tengelyi's account of selfhood are addressed, such as the retrospective character of the narr…
