The volunteer stages and transitions model
In the last two decades knowledge on volunteering has significantly expanded, but a thorough understanding of the organizational socialization of volunteers is still lacking: the process through which one learns the job, internalizes organizational values and goals, and becomes an effective and involved volunteer. By performing an ethnographic study with Israeli volunteers working for at-risk youth, the organizational process was portrayed. The V…
Personal and intellectual influences leading to Lewin’s paradigm of action research
The idea of action research and social change was the last conceptual topic to engage Kurt Lewin’s attention and energy prior to his untimely death in February 1947. In this article we commemorate the 60th anniversary of his 1946 paper ‘Action research and minority problems’. In the present article, eight principles of action research which were extracted from Lewin’s writings are presented and discussed. We attempt to show that the action resear…
Structure and Process in Reconciliation-Transformation Workshops
This article presents a detailed blueprint for conducting reconciliation-transformation workshops among Jewish and Palestinian youth. The workshops are based on interventions that deal with intragroup and intergroup dynamics. Conflict management workshops, which at one time utilized small group interventions to create a bridge between two conflicting parties, are no longer effective. The recent escalation of the conflict between Israelis and Pale…
Critical Junctures, Labor Movements and the Development of Occupational Welfare in Israel
The role of occupational welfare, and in particular that of occupational pensions, has gained growing attention in the study of welfare states in recent years. This article draws on a variety of primary and secondary data and two theoretical models, power resources and path dependency, in order to analyze the emergence of occupational welfare in the Israeli welfare state. In particular, it explores the notion of "critical junctures" and their rol…
Perception of job satisfaction, service effectiveness and burnout among Arab social workers in Israel
Over the past three decades, the topics of job satisfaction and burnout have become a major focus of interest in research and professional training in the field of social work. However, there is a serious lack of studies focusing on these issues in the context of Arab social workers in Israel. This paper presents the results obtained from a subsample of Arab participants in a national study of Israeli social workers. It focuses on the correlation…

A Lewinian Approach to Intergroup Workshops for Arab‐Palestinian and Jewish Youth
This article utilizes three areas of knowledge derived from field theory to conceptualize and analyze the planning and conduct of conflict management workshops for Arab and Jewish youth in Israel. The three areas of knowledge are ethnic identity and majority—minority relations, a theory of individual change within a social group, and principles of action research. The central field‐theoretical concepts in each of these areas were applied to conte…
Introduction
This journal issue commemorates the recent 100th anniversary of the birth of Kurt Lewin, a founder of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and of this, SPSSI's journal. It appears that his influence in academic social psychology has declined of late, but a review of recent literature reveals that Lewin's thought and work still guide activity in applied social psychology, particularly studies of groups, and in the practice of a…

Role Problems for Trainers in an Arab-Jewish Conflict-Management Workshop
The article describes and analyzes role problems of trainers who conduct conflict-management workshops between Arabs and Jews in Israel. Using role theory concepts, the article focuses on two types of role problems: role ambiguity and role conflict. Role ambiguity in this case stems from two sources: inadequate information concerning ends or goals of conflict-management workshops and inadequate information concerning the trainers' appropriate beh…
Self-Help Awareness in Israel
Observers of the Israeli society in the 1950s and 1960s have characterized its political structure as centralistic, with a very large public sector and with relatively little activity taking place outside it or without its consent. There are indications that since the early 1970s, certain structural changes have been taking place, whereby the centralistic nature of the society is giving way to a more open and tolerant atmosphere towards political…

Social work is a relatively recent development in the area of business and industry.
