Longitudinal validation of the PROMIS-16 in a sample of adults in the United States with back pain
Results provide between-level support for the longitudinal and predictive validity of the PROMIS-16. Similar average baseline scores and changes over time were observed between PROMIS-16 and PROMIS-29 + 2. Further, average change estimates comparably predicted average change in distal outcomes. This work provides evidence supporting the utility of the PROMIS-16 as a viable, short-profile option for use in clinical and research settings
The PROMIS-16 reproduces the PROMIS-29 physical and mental health summary scores accurately in a probability-based internet panel
The PROMIS-16 provides similar estimates of the PROMIS-29 physical and mental health summary scores. The high reliability of these scores indicates they are accurate enough for use with individual patients
Comparing patient-reported outcomes measurement information system® (PROMIS®)-16 domain scores with the PROMIS-29 and 5-item PROMIS cognitive function scores
The PROMIS-16 domain scores perform similarly to the longer PROMIS measures and can be interpreted in the same way. This similarity indicates that PROMIS-16 can be useful for research as a brief health-related quality-of-life profile measure
Development of an ultra-short measure of eight domains of health-related quality of life for research and clinical care: The patient-reported outcomes measurement information system® PROMIS®-16 profil…
The PROMIS-16 Profile provides an attractive brief measure of eight distinct domains of health-related quality of life, representing an ideal screening tool for clinical care, which can help clinicians quickly identify distinct areas of concern that may require further assessment and follow-up. Further research is needed to confirm and extend these findings
A Perspective on the Measurement of Whole Person Health
There is growing interest in moving away from a reductionistic view of the person and the health services they need to focus on improving the health of the whole person. However, there needs to be agreement about what this focus entails and how to measure its achievement. From this perspective, we offer suggestions for moving the measurement discussion forward. Our key suggestion is to separate the measurement of whole person health (WPH)—that is…
Comparison of patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS®)-29 and PROMIS global physical and mental health scores
PROMIS-29 and PROMIS global mental health scales provide different information and, therefore, study conclusions may vary depending on which measure is used. Interpretation of results needs to consider that the PROMIS-29 mental health scale is a weighted combination of specific domains while the PROMIS global mental health scale is based on general mental health perceptions. Further comparisons of methods of assessing mental health are needed

Diet quality improvement and 30-year population health and economic outcomes: A microsimulation study
Objective: Diets closer aligned with nutritional guidelines could lower the risk of several chronic conditions and improve economic outcomes, such as employment and healthcare costs. However, little is known about the range, order of magnitude and timing of these potential effects. Design: We used a microsimulation approach to predict US population changes over 30 years in health and economic outcomes that could result from a substantial (but not…

Clinical Scenarios for Which Spinal Mobilization and Manipulation Are Considered by an Expert Panel to be Inappropriate (and Appropriate) for Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain
BACKGROUND: Spinal mobilization and manipulation are 2 therapies found to be generally safe and effective for chronic low back pain (CLBP). However, the question remains whether they are appropriate for all CLBP patients. RESEARCH DESIGN: An expert panel used a well-validated approach, including an evidence synthesis and clinical acumen, to develop and then rate the appropriateness of the use of spinal mobilization and manipulation across an exha…

Using participatory methods to enhance patient‐centred mental health care in a federally qualified community health center serving a M exican A merican farmworker community
BACKGROUND: Mexican American farmworkers experience high rates of mental health conditions; however, it is difficult for them to access care. Patient-centred care is a systems-wide approach to improving the delivery of services for diverse populations in the primary care setting. AIM: We describe the application of community-based participatory research methods to assess and address gaps in perceptions of mental health care between providers and …
Community health workers as focus group facilitators: A participatory action research method to improve behavioral health services for farmworkers in a primary care setting
Farmworkers living in US-Border communities experience numerous stressors in their daily lives that place them at risk for behavioral health problems, particularly anxiety and depression. Given challenges to accessing care, farmworkers are most likely to receive services in the primary care setting. In this paper, we describe a participatory action research (PAR) approach in which community health workers (CHWs) use focus groups to engage the pat…
Health Insurance Status, Medical Debt, and Their Impact on Access to Care in Arizona
Objectives. We examined the impact of health insurance status on medical debt among Arizona residents and the impact of both of these factors on access to care. Methods. We estimated logistic regression models for medical debt (problems paying and currently paying medical bills) and access to care (medical care and medications delayed or missed because of cost or lack of insurance). Results. Insured status did not predict medical debt after contr…
Hospital Admissions for Acute Myocardial Infarction, Angina, Stroke, and Asthma After Implementation of Arizona's Comprehensive Statewide Smoking Ban
Objectives. We examined the impact of Arizona's May 2007 comprehensive statewide smoking ban on hospital admissions for diagnoses for which there is evidence of a causal relationship with secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure (acute myocardial infarction [AMI], angina, stroke, and asthma). Methods. We compared monthly hospital admissions from January 2004 through May 2008 for these primary diagnoses and 4 diagnoses not associated with SHS (appendicitis…
