A dialogical talk about power and partnership in participatory action research in social work
This research note presents a dialogue between the article’s authors, co-researchers in participatory action research (PAR) focused on social work with girls and young women. The conversation explores power relations and partnership throughout the research process. The first author, a social worker, researcher, and lecturer, led the PAR as part of her doctoral study. The second author, a research partner and expert by experience, draws on her liv…
Emotional burden and self-care strategies among individuals in the sex trade during Covid-19 in Israel
Research on the sex trade during COVID-19 has documented the intertwined material and emotional hardships faced by individuals in the sex trade. Building on these insights, this article examines how self-care practices functioned as relational and strategic responses to crisis. Drawing on twenty semi-structured interviews conducted in Israel between May and December 2020, findings highlight two intersecting themes: the emotional burden caused by …
"Whose mother am I?" Maternal identity reconstruction among bereaved mothers of infants who died of Sids
The term sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) refers to the unexpected and medically unexplained death of an infant, typically during sleep. This study examines how maternal identity is reconstructed among 14 Jewish Israeli mothers who experienced the loss of a baby to SIDS. We began with the assumption, well-grounded in modern grief models, that loss undermines the bereaved identity and in the case of SIDS the undermine of maternal identity is li…
The moral behaviour of single young women immigrants to Mandatory Palestine
Migration has always constituted a meeting point of opportunity, risk, and vulnerability. Concerns surrounding the sex trafficking of women have caused moral panic since the mid-1800s and led to social workers’ preventive initiatives and interventions in Europe and the United States. This article explores a historical moment in which Henrietta Szold, who headed the Social Welfare Department in Mandatory Palestine in 1934, decided to send social w…
Social work with young women in security emergencies
In this article, I reflect on my practice as a social worker with young Jewish and Arab Bedouin women from marginalized groups in Israel during security emergencies. I use the autoethnography of a reflective story from a program for girls and young women in which I was working at the start of Operation Cast Lead (December 27, 2008–January 18, 2009) in Israel. I discuss epistemic injustice and epistemic resistance as they concern girls who are cop…
Four practices for conducting feminist participatory action research with young women
While there has been an increase in action research explicitly defined as feminist in orientation, there has not been sufficient discussion on the actual translation of feminist theory into research practices. The aim of this article is to contribute to the growing body of knowledge labelled Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) by articulating specific research practices for conducting research with young women who are negotiating social…
Critical Social Work
This performance ethnography presents a multi-vocal dialog of a group of social workers and social work students dealing with personal and professional issues of critical social work. Performance ethnography is an innovative qualitative research method that uses a dramatic medium to bridge between theory and personal experiences and between research, teaching, and learning. Through personal writing and a discussion of an intervention story, we pr…
