“I’m still the queen and I’m still on my throne…”
People with dementia have long been defined by the label of dementia, rather than by other aspects of their identities including gender. As a result, little research has focused on gender and dementia, particularly through the perspectives of those living with dementia. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perspectives of women living with dementia. Specifically, we sought to understand how gender structured their experien…
Creating change
People with dementia have typically been treated as homogenous groups with little recognition of unique aspects of identities, including age and gender. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the experiences of women living with young onset dementia which led them to take up advocacy roles as a result of their experiences. Five women from Canada who were diagnosed with young onset dementia and had then taken on advocacy roles were interviewed…
Stigma, discrimination and agency
It's not only for sick people”
The research explored in this paper is part of a larger project examining the experiences of aging‐in‐place in a rural, northern Ontario context where communities are in a state of economic instability or transition. We focused on a case study of one community in northwestern Ontario, and explored the role and social place of the hospital in a small rural northern town using focused ethnography. In total, 84 people were interviewed, including old…
A dialogue and reflection on photohistory
Attempts at capturing observations and concerns of change in the Canadian north (sub-Arctic, Arctic) have been mostly conducted through interviews and focus groups spearheaded by researchers. Indeed, images depicting change in the north, when utilized at all, are mostly used to confirm and illustrate the findings derived from researchers. Rarely are local depictions of change used in these interpretations. The purpose of this Notes from the field…
Pathologizing behavior
Masculinity, ageing bodies, and leisure
In the shift towards understanding the lived leisure experiences of women, the experiences of men have generally been left under-studied, particularly from a gendered analysis perspective. As such, we know less about the leisure experiences of men, especially the lives of older men. In response to this gap, the purpose of this research was to explore the meaning of masculinity in old age and to understand ageing for men, focusing primarily on the…

The experiences of place
Gazing upon Nanuk, the polar bear
The importance of photography to the ‘wildlife gaze’ should come as no surprise since photography is an integral component in the observation of wildlife tourism. Also essential to the experience, yet often overlooked, is the social dynamics of tourism. Fourteen interviews were conducted with eighteen polar bear viewers visiting two protected areas near Churchill Manitoba, Canada. Three main themes emerged from these interviews relating to the ch…
Perceptions of Polar Bear Tourists
A number of themes and concepts emerged from 18 interviews conducted with polar bear tourists visiting the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, near Churchill, Manitoba. This article focuses on themes relating to environmental dimensions of polar bear tourism. These include environmental concerns, rationalization of wildlife tourism, and perceptions of environmental impacts. By focusing on the human dimensions of wildlife tourism in protected area…
