Race/ethnicity and contexts
Background: This study examined how racial/ethnic discrimination may shape alcohol use behaviors, related problems, and contexts of alcohol use among underage youth (<21 years old). Age group differences were also explored. Methods: Cross-sectional data were obtained from California youth identified as racial and ethnic minoritized youth (n=605; ages 14-20). An adapted version of the Everyday Discrimination Scale was used to assess racial/ethnic …
Harm perceptions of vaping nicotine relative to cigarette smoking among sexual and gender minority young adults
An Exploration of Rural Housing Insecurity as a Public Health Problem in California’s Rural Northern Counties
Context-Specific Drinking Risks among Adolescents
Background: Research has shown that specific contexts are associated with alcohol related problems in adults, but less is known about adolescents. Objectives: We examined how frequencies of drinking in different contexts and the amount of alcohol consumed in these contexts may be related to different alcohol-related problems among adolescent drinkers. Methods: Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey with 377 adolescents (13 to 18 yea…
Understanding the impact of Covid-19 on tobacco and nicotine use among young adults identified as sexual and gender minorities
We investigated the perceived impact of COVID-19 on changes in tobacco and nicotine (NT) use among sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults. We used a mixed methods approach that included closed- and open-ended survey questions and in-depth interviews. Participants were 53 SGM young adults in California who reported current or past cigarette smoking. Of study participants, 63% (n=33) reported any changes in their NT use, and of those, 60% re…
Socio-temporal contextual and community factors associated with daily exclusive ENDS use and dual use with tobacco cigarettes among adolescent vapers
Results showed that exposure to peers and adults vaping and exposure to ENDS marketing were associated with same day dual use behaviors. And, that adolescents who dual used were motivated to use ENDS because they were easy to conceal. Findings support stricter regulation of ENDS marketing and for smoke-free air laws that include ENDS. In addition, these findings support prioritizing family- and school-based prevention programming that effectively…
I don’t know whose mouth has been on this”
Early COVID-19 safety protocols urged physical and social distancing, resulting in minimal contact with others. As social contexts are central to vaping among youth, we used semi-structured interviews to describe how youth who vape are making sense of their use practices and adaptations. The qualitative analyses revealed changes in vaping frequency and access, social isolation shaping substance- and product-specific use, and motivations and outco…
Time perspective and substance use
Time perspective is conceptualized as a multidimensional construct that assesses individuals' feelings and thoughts about the past, present, and future. The current study examined relationships between feelings (time attitudes) and thoughts (time orientation) about time and substance use behaviors across three adolescent samples. Participants included a high-risk sample of adjudicated youth ( N =124; M age =15.54, SD =1.69; 51.61% female) and two…
Objective and perceived measures of tobacco marketing are uniquely associated with cigar use
Tobacco control efforts should consider both perceived and objective exposure to tobacco marketing and unique associations with blunt use to prevent cigar use
California’s tobacco 21 minimum sales age law and adolescents’ tobacco and nicotine use
Our findings highlight the importance of understanding the complex associations that T21 and other tobacco control policies have with the use of different tobacco and nicotine products among racial and ethnic groups. Future research should investigate mechanisms underlying these differences to inform tobacco control efforts
Youth perspectives on concurrent smoking and vaping
Most people who smoke cigarettes begin young. Consequently, public health efforts directed at youth are a priority. The increasing popularity of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) among youth in the United States has raised concerns in the public health community about the potential of ENDS to renormalize cigarette smoking and perpetuate nicotine addiction, creating dual users who both vape and smoke. Despite limited and inconclusive evi…
Using photovoice to develop critical awareness of tobacco environments for marginalized youth in California
Photovoice is used widely for engaging community members in action research aimed at reducing health inequities. Photovoice methodology can help to raise participants’ critical awareness regarding the root causes of community health problems, thereby encouraging them to take action to address these root causes. We report on our experiences using photovoice as part of a tobacco prevention project with multiethnic youths in an underresourced Northe…
The gendered experience of smoking stigma
Tobacco denormalization is a widely accepted tobacco control strategy, shaping policies and programs throughout the United States as well as globally. In spite of widespread beliefs about the effectiveness of tobacco denormalization approaches, concerns about their emphasis on stigmatization have emerged. Social science research on smoking stigma raises questions about the potential iatrogenic consequences of tobacco denormalization approaches. F…
Youth activity spaces and daily exposure to tobacco outlets
Tobacco Denormalization as a Public Health Strategy
Although the population-level success of tobacco denormalization is widely accepted, it remains unclear whether these strategies alleviate health inequities for sexual and gender minorities. The high risk of smoking among sexual and gender minorities together with research that documents a relationship between stigma-related processes and smoking prevalence for these groups raises questions about whether tobacco-related stigma intensifies the dis…
Community-Level Adult Daily Smoking Prevalence Moderates the Association Between Adolescents’ Cigarette Smoking and Perceived Smoking by Friends
Tobacco Environment for Southeast Asian American Youth
Despite reports of high rates of smoking among Southeast Asian refugees in the United States, few studies have described the environmental aspects of tobacco use among this population, particularly for the second-generation youths. This absence is notable because the social environment within which second-generation youths are exposed to tobacco products differs radically from the natal environment of their parents. We describe results of a youth…
Rating the Effectiveness of Local Tobacco Policies for Reducing Youth Smoking
Contextual and community factors associated with youth access to cigarettes through commercial sources
This study enhances our understanding of the associations between contextual and community characteristics and youth access to tobacco through commercial sources which can help policymakers to identify and target at-risk communities and outlets to decrease youth access to tobacco
Youth-Led Tobacco Prevention
Key supports for youth were youth leaders, social and financial rewards, and the ability to interpret tobacco prevention information in culturally and age-relevant media
