This article offers a critical reflection on ways of defining, counting and classifying tourism. With reference to sources dealing with the camping sector, this article emphasizes the shortcomings of official Belgian statistics, and discusses the root causes of their deficiencies. The issues raised in the Belgian setting are transferable, providing an excellent basis for comparison in other parts of the world
